The three new star wars movies are shit.
The three original star wars movies are dated and redundant, and people over the age of 30 should learn to recognise that those badly executed, latex puppet infested fag packet stories with clichéd characters simply do not carry any cultural cache for anyone else. I say, don't waste your young child's time and your own ideals by hoping this crap means as much to them as it does to you.
Its time we moved on. Star Wars is retarding an entire industry.

Glad to hear someone finally speak the truth.
It never really added up to a convincing fantasy/ sci fi world, just a bunch of mediocre actors running around in goofy costumes as pretext to sell cheap, disposable toys to prop up the Taiwanese economy.

@Horp. I agree, Star Wars sucks. But a 6 year old would probably like it, it's made for kids. Old dudes just like it for nostalgia. I saw Star Wars (original trilogy) for the first time at about age 17 and I said to my friends, "Uh, are you guys serious? This sucks!" Anyway, if daddy wants to have a little bonding time with his son, better to show him now while he's young and naive and doesn't know how to tell if something is good or not.
More importantly: "don't waste your child's time?" You can't waste a child's time. Their time has no value. What else is he going to be doing? Getting a job? Studying for college?

No. WAY too young for a job or advanced education. Try spending some time playing, or bonding over an activity. Go and find nature and look for bugs, build a den, do a drawing together, make up some funny stories, go and have a giant glass of ice cream in a really expensive restaurant and behave like a pair of loons.
Too soon to be thinking about jobs and college. Way too soon.

Its so trendy to hate on the prequels, I think its even cool for hipsters to hate on them, but the fact is kids love them. My little sister was like 12 when it came out and she LOVED it! The 3rd is a little dark I think for young kids though. But episode 1 is something that a lot of young kids loved.
Of course for adults, some of the dialogue is very hokey in the prequels, the actors did what they could with shitty scripts, but for just brainless sci-fi action, they arent that bad.
Although if you're going to start a child out on star wars these days, go with the Clone Wars TV series. There was a movie to introduce the cartoon, but it kind of sucked, the series itself is actually pretty awesome. I have seasons 1 and 2 on bluray and its great. And I know tons of kids are hooked on it.
- Yes, they're hokey and cheesey, but theyre still fun. Jeesh, such a tough crowd.Josev

am I the only one that thinks 6 is pretty damn young?
Lego movies will do just fine, much better I'd think, as they would be something he cares about
- I watched the entire series when I was 6. I loved it.monospaced

How can you tell if your kid is old enough to watch Empire Strikes Back, and other dark classics?

the phantom menace.
Everybody loved the phantom menace!!!!
(though seriously... I do think starting with the modern ones might ease him into it. Are 6y/o kids these days ready for subtleties and character development? might he not appreciate the newer ones more now... and love the older ones when he's about 10?)

from calles's post:
Generally, kids can understand the difference between reality and fantasy around the age of eight, but it depends on each child. Some have a more sensitive temperament in which they can't handle scary movies, themes, screen violence (implied or graphic), monsters etc., even though logically, they know they are not real.
