Has anyone here traveled to or lived in Oaxaca, Mexico?
I wanted to visit Mexico in June and Oaxaca looked not too touristy and with cultural value.
Any recos or advice is much appreciated.

I've been to Guadalajara and Guanajuato, but not Oaxaca. I highly recommend Guanajuato.

It is nice, but quite touristy.

I wouldn't call very touristy, although it is slowly getting touristy because of people that want to visit a not so touristy place.
It is a really nice place with lots of culture. Going there to me was like traveling back in time to old Mexico.
If you want to see modern buildings, shop at a mall, go to nightclubs then Oaxaca is not the right place.

Oaxaca appears to be a cultural mecca for drug violence in Mexico.

I spent a month traveling in Yucatan peninsula. It was an amazing experience. I had no idea Mexico was that beautiful.
I bought a book "hidden places of Yucatan", rented a car and took off with my girlfriend for a month of exploring. Hidden caves, little known ruins, fishing villages. We got so fascinated with the Mayan culture that in 2 years we returned and had Mayan weddings on one of the secluded beach with a shaman Don Luis.

went about 10 years ago wasn't very touristy. great square for sitting and watching the World go by. Try the local cheese. Don't stay at Magic Hostel - worst hostel on Earth. Have a wander without a map and see what happens.

I was there 5 years ago as they where shooting Nacho Libre there.
I thought the city was great, little english was spoken and to me it didn't feel touristy.

I loved Oaxaca - great market full of fabulous smells (Oaxaca is famous for it's 7 kinds of mole), fabulous weaving in the outlying villages, wonderful old town, very colourful and chilled.
But this was years ago, the place has probably been trashed by tourism.
- We flew into Oaxaca from Puerto Escondido on an old DC3, where the drinks trolley was a crate of beer dragged up the aisle! Still the best flight I've ever had....hans_glib

I was in Huatulco 2 weeks ago. Oaxaca was nice, it's pretty laid back and it's mostly for mexican tourists from mexico city. The diving and snorkeling wasn't bad either: http://www.youtube.com/user/zark…
- There's a lot of stuff that feels genuine enough so you don't get the bullshit feeling you do in Riviera Maya.zarkonite

Follow up question that I feel like I already know the answer to:
Am I going to look like a pompous asshole walking around taking pics with an SLR? Are people reluctant to have photos of them taken in the markets?
- not if you buy something!HijoDMaite
