I feel account execs are a mixed blessing.

I work in an advertising and design agency and personally I think the creativity and conceptual side of things is much more exciting, quick turn around, and some of the brands I work with get a lot of public
air-time, so seeing work out there is ace.The other thing that's important to me is the fact that it's a small agency, so I get to have a load of control over many different bits.

I kinda did, worked in a small 'integrated communications' agency as an art director / creative director / senior designer for about 3 years as a break from the traditional graphic design studio structure... just to get a feel for the dark side and pay off some debts...
it's nice to work more strategically (if you care about those things) but overall, I have to say that it sucked pretty badly...
- hah, i cant see you working in an agency setting. "please change this layout"********

did it for 5 years, then went to corporate(globalmedtechcompany)f... the stability.
if you like using different fonts and actually designing either go for an agency or find an inhouse gig with a brand that is progressive and something you dont mind seeing everyday.
At agencies much of your work never sees the light of day, you work super hard and its ultra competitive. Don't get in the water unless you can swim with the sharks : )
