So im sort of conflicted on this as i can see there are no refurbs here in scandinavia which sucks - im thinking about either building a hac pro or just going all out for imac i7.
Hac pro is tempting since you can get an ssd in.
The imac i would be buying wouldnt contain one since im already over my budget and i would go for applecare/ram.Will be used for cs4 and some fun work in ae/c4d
Recommendations?

I'd say go for hackintosh. Get an ssd, 8gb or ram. And it will be half the price and better than the iMac. But you have to dedicate the time to setting up hackintosh which might take a couple of days.
If you don't think the effort/time needed for hackintosh then an iMac is the one for you.
Either way enjoy your new system :)
where abouts are you?

I would recommend going for the SSD + HD combo from Apple then upgrade your ram later. Or see if you can hold off for a month to raise funding for the SSD upgrade. I use one of the dual SSD/HD iMacs and it is a fantastic workhorse.

Hombre: Ive read the nofilmschool guide also tried looking up the needed parts (the exact ones from the guide) and so far i can save up to 50%(awesome). Im a bit scared though if its going to work properly since im not interested in having all that gear and being stuck on win 7.
Have you built one yourself?
zod: Ok it seems reasonable for the 256gig one but that 1TB the price is just.. almost made me pull out all of my hair.
Do you have I7 or I5?
- i7. Runs like a dream.zod
- Also, most of my system/application files are on the SSD. That's where the speed comes from.zod
- I7? 920? 950? 2600k?Hombre_Lobo

i would say, cs4 is your biggest problem. ;-)
- I don't follow your logicmonospaced
- no matter what mac he gets. cs4 will still be a pain in the ass.akrok
- nothing wrong with CS4monospaced
- i don't agree on that. but that's okay.akrok

@Attentionspan
I haven't build one myself but I did look into quite a lot and it seems as long as you dedicate the time trouble shoot the problems (which may take a couple of days) it's a full solid OSX system.http://www.qbn.com/topics/649122…
johnny wobble has a thread^ talking about his hackingtosh install. Very useful source. Also in that thread there is a video of an i7 SSD hackintosh mac machine opening something 50 apps in 7 secs. It's impressive!
Enjoy your bargain mac power house!! :)

Also I'm not fimiliar with the noschool guide, care to link?
The threa I posted above has johnny wobbles install process which looks to be the most reliable.

I LOVE my hackintosh.... but I have to admit there are oddities... I had to get a USB sound card... $4 on ebay.
- attentionspan0
Could you elaborate on oddities?

in my case, Lightroom 3 didn't work till I searched a bit and downloaded a patch from some fellow hackintosher.... SO, if you're not wanting to do stuff like that, you just want something that simply works, I'd consider a refurb mac, and/or have at least another mac in case your hackintosh get some sort of quirk...

Also, I haven't been able to get Hasselblad Phocus to work on my hackintosh... but I may have to upgrade my video card...
- attentionspan0
Vax did you follow the nofilmschool guide?
- no... got the machine from a previous person's build...vaxorcist

There is always a risk that a future OS update will break your hackintosh.
Actually... Don't you need to wait with every OS update until the hackers patch them?

I've used one for my main work machine for the past 3 years or so. I've built perhaps 4 of them by now... the first one had some hiccups - the sound didn't work out of the box, and it took a while to get the video card to work. This latest one though, works like a charm. i7 xeon cpu oc'd to 4ghz, 12 gigs of ram, 128gb ssd - works great.
That being said though, there is a learning curve for some folks. I have a decent amount of linux admin background, so I'm comfortable with the command line and building computers in general, so if you don't have that knowledge or are not up for learning, an iMac might be the way to go. You could always buy one, then save for that ssd.
