I've used one for my main work machine for the past 3 years or so. I've built perhaps 4 of them by now... the first one had some hiccups - the sound didn't work out of the box, and it took a while to get the video card to work. This latest one though, works like a charm. i7 xeon cpu oc'd to 4ghz, 12 gigs of ram, 128gb ssd - works great.
That being said though, there is a learning curve for some folks. I have a decent amount of linux admin background, so I'm comfortable with the command line and building computers in general, so if you don't have that knowledge or are not up for learning, an iMac might be the way to go. You could always buy one, then save for that ssd.
