thanks, I generally do what you've all suggested, i.e. move the cunt in the middle and shimmy the columns etc. But it feels a bit wrong and lumpy, like set's mum.
- lol, leave my grid based mother out of this.set
- her grids are so center weighted.
if you're picking up what im putting down.Hombre_Lobo - you'll be picking yourself up after I put you down..! ;-Dset
- not funny, i knowset

When you pull this stunt, don't be so hard on yourself and break the freakin' grid already. Shift the drop shadow over so it's in the gutter, then align type a column over on the right. I mean, there are so many solutions it's not even funny.

Grids are a base, not a constraint. If you still want to absolutely position eveything buy a grid, use more columns, in this case you could use a 16 column layout (4 columns per section) and using only 3 for the left one, using one for your big fat drop shadow.
Or just use what you have as a base and don't mind crossing the line sometimes.

I'd use a smaller drop shadow or re-define another grid with larger gutter areas. If you are using 960.gs as it seems here (I could be wrong) It should be easy to tweak the code or adjust the rulers to allow smaller elements and more gutter space.
Also rather than putting the drop shadow to the left of the gutter put it in the middle.

I have a common issue when designing with a grid and hoping others here have come across it:
For example, I can space four boxes horizontally across using the gutters defined by the grid, like so...
...lovely. This is fine when the background is plain and has no graphical elements involved.
But, I'm trying to separate the content to give one side more emphasis, using for example here a big fat drop shadow...
...which if I keep my main content within the grid encroaches on the spacing to the left of it.
How do you chaps deal with this?
