For you facebook users: When you login, are you able to see a running list of all new updates from all your friends at one time? Or do you have to manually go to each person's Facebook to see if they updated their "status"?

500,000,000 facebook users (apparently), global population is approx 6,894,800,000 so the answer to your question is:
6,394,800,000 people aren't on facebook yet. They have a long way to go.

Hey people even if you don't like FB, you should probably open an account and use it just for research purposes, seeing as a lot of new interactive design paradigms and systems are being developed and used within it's walls, and if you don't know what they are, then you're basically falling behind. It's the industry we're all in
- what industry is that?e-pill
- the social-media smoke & mirrors hype industry. we'll be left behind ~ o noes! lolreinitialize
- Um, graphic design, interactive design, creative communication, digital interaction, programming.Ancillary
- They're currently creating standards for how we interact with each other online. Surprised you had to ask really.Ancillary
- wank wank wank wank********
- ha, all that and you didnt even remotely post my industry in there..i figured as much..e-pill

Ancillary - have any examples? Serious question. Am unsure how in the walls of facebook there is particular UI and design work happening...

Seems like a lot of you (in this thread) think facebook is lame or a waste of time, despite not using the site or understanding how it works. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you've given a close look at the site in the past and made your judgement based on that. Probably worth another look, though.
While facebook might not be cool enough for you to actually use, you can't deny it's relevance.
While newspapers were trying to come up with a new business model for the internet age to continue to sell their advertising, Facebook came along and created an advertising-media platform. From an advertiser's point of view, it's brilliant.
If you're interested in web design, it's fascinating to watch Facebook implement new features and how they adapt to what people want. Other times they convince people that what they want is Facebook.
The design of the site is constantly adapted. The site itself is paying attention to click paths, how users navigate the web, what they share. It's mining huge amounts of data and learning from it.
Facebook adds features only when people are willing to accept these changes, usually long after the technology allows for it. One example of this: many profiles now feature automatic tagging (faces) in photos. The site asks you to enter the person's name. Clearly, they don't need to ask. The site knows exactly who the person is in your photo (via face recognition and the fact that they are likely tagged in another photo somewhere on facebook.) And yet, Facebook knows they better not fully implement auto face recognition to quickly, because it will cause users to be more aware of how smart the site has become.
It's quite fascinating.
- Also: lots of babes on FB. Easy to get laid, if you're single.********

@nb It's quite fascinating to watch the thought, development and anti-usability that went into FB privacy settings and interface. That is if you can find it first. It's all built very clean and explained well especially to 13-15 yr. old kids.
No, I don't have an FB account but have been asked numerous times to check and change these settings for friend's kids in the last few years...
To put it in your words: "It's quite fascinating."

@caput58: Agreed. Their "privacy" controls are carefully designed to ensure that usability is maximized, but not for users. They're maximizing the usability of the site for marketers.

"Their "privacy" controls are carefully designed to ensure that usability is maximized, but not for users." LOL
Who the fuck put users in usability? :)
- Ha. Users aren't the target market. Users are the product that facebook is selling.********
- I know, and agree with you, just makes me laugh.caput58
