If you were teaching a group of students [19+] photoshop and they'd never used it before, and you should assume no knowledge, what would you consider the most important features to know.
Colour profile
resolution for various jobs
tool palette
...
Hard to think back to day one.

get them into it by having fun. copying and pasting their heads onto other people and then getting the color close so it looks more real.
- yes, make it task basedmonospaced
- this thread will rule if you collect their homeworkmonospaced

Thought I would post my favorite retouching trick that I use a ton:
1. Duplicate layer
2. Change blending mode to Soft Light
3. Image > Adjustments > Shadows/Highlights (i usually leave it the default)
4. Filter > Other > High Pass (usually use a radius between 2-3.5)
Don't know if this one is common knowledge but I think it's a good one :) Feel free to post your tricks as well.
cheers

The best way to teach a novice something is by going through something enjoyable and reiterating what you are showing them.
Explaining that 'This is the tool palette where you can find the Magic Wand, Pen and Brush tools' won't sink in, even at that age group.
Showing them the process of superimposing their mates faces onto gay porn or shit like that will teach them pretty well about masking, sourcing from the original image, colour e.t.c
- I'm self-taught, but I learnt the best when doing fun stuff like creating believeable imagery of a boat in sand, animal head crossovers e.t.c********

God I hate teaching, I had an intern come in for a week and I realised how fucking shit it is too teach. Really tricky.
I ended up just letting her watch what I was doing all day and asking questions whenever she wanted.
It's really difficult to know where to start and what to teach, good luck man!
Very unhelpful reply I know :-/

Orrinward has a point.
Doing something really silly like that will get them interested, just make sure they know the skills used have many applications.

I taught my self photoshop by pasting other peoples heads onto hardcore porn. so what jay said above. teach them this but on something not porn. they'll all go home and do their homework!
i think the fundamental of ps is selection tools and layers. the rest is all either not necessary, or can be learnt by guess work.
oh. and hot keys. i had a tutor once that taught me hot keys when i learnt flash, i never learnt menus. i watch other people using it now and think how much of an arse it must be without using hot keys.

rgb/cmyk differences was pretty big for me.
- just do everything in rgb, it looks nicer.mydo
- then you have to get into additive and subtractive color, and light and gamutmonospaced
- just sayin' when this was shown to me, the rest of learning photoshop fell in place too.bjladams

I really hate how teachers and institutions teach photoshop. Too much emphasis on the program itself. No one wants to learn photoshop. They want to know how to do photo editing, or make websites, or create 3d perspectives, using photoshop. All these institutions create is a bunch of retard designers who know how to use photoshop, but do not know how to design.
If you're gonna teach a beginner's photoshop class, it should include a history on photo editing and probably an hour on the beauty of photographs.

Just hand out a list of tutorial blog urls and tell them to keep the fucking nose down.

i took a ps class during college.
it wasn't much help. most of my classmates for that one were fashion design students and were more interested in the red light under the mouse.
the best things that i came away with from that class were:
1) laughing at the silliness of aspiring fashion designers
2) proper rgb/cmyk usage (up till then i'd been doing all in rgb)
3) ... cant think of a third one. the class wasnt so great.things i wish they had taught me:
1) proper usage of black
2) channels
3) taking fashion designers seriouslygood luck though.
