Chicagoan John Maloof has received an Oscar nomination for a documentary feature about extraordinary street photographer Vivian Maier, who for much of her life was a nanny in the northern suburbs.

I finally got around to watching the documentary this evening, she was very creative...but extremely dark and damaged as human. A really good doc.
- check out the BBC one aswell, look for a torrent ;)Weyland

The film reveals that she very much did know she was a good photographer. She worked very close with printers on achieving exactly the look, and print that she envisioned. She also wrote a letter to a print shop in France stating that she wanted to get in to business together by selling her prints.

She probably didn't even know she was good at it. She just kept doing it. With out any acknowledgment from anybody.

Never heard of her. Thanks for sharing.

bought the DVD from Amazon and watched it last night. Loved it. The lady was definitely whacky.
Did anyone get the feeling that the dark secret her family kept was that maybe their father was some sort of monster or war criminal?
- hm hadn't thought of that, but that's an interesting theory.colin_s

Amazing story and intriguing character, there's a brilliant BBC documentary aswell, the maker of the film didn't want to be involved so it's a great look at the other people who found the pictures and met her

I spent 3 hours last night viewing her work, amazing.

- This guy has some very good points, she never got to curate her own work.HijoDMaite
- Anyone can be a curator these days.freedom
- You need a degree to be a curator?freedom
- Stop saying "curator" dude.freedom
- He sounds pretty jealous. Downplaying the work, and i think it's because he wishes he had the opportunity and feels the people own the prints aren't worthy.summs
- ...and feels the people who own the prints aren't worthy. Perfect marketing i think. I hope they do well.summs

Phenomenal work, over 100,000 negatives...John Maloof will be a multi-millionaire sooner rather than later.

Saw it in the theater. Very good documentary. Creepy woman though.

in the video he mentions how the photos could be worth a lot, but its seems somewhat wrong for him to make money from someone elses hard work.
Compensation for his work and costs yeh, but surely if the photos made lots of money it should go to her family.
Even better if they knew of a charity or interest of Vivian Maier's which the profits could be donated to.
- set up a foundation - all money goes to that - family can oversee it and commitee can distribute moneys made to upcoming photogs / arts charities - noofadein11
- photogs / arts charities. Noone should get rich from her work apart from her - will be disgraceful if that happensfadein11

- It seems wrong, but museums and galleries make money off people's work. Why shouldn't he?freedom
- museums buy or borrow work usually with the aim of making the work available to the public. And most museums are non-profit organisations. Are you referring to the commercial gallery system? Not the same.fadein11
