Just trying to figure out the best value for money processor.
Cheers

i3, future architecture..

i5 or i7 if you wanna stay with the game.
- yeh, its a bit more expensive, worth it then?antonyjwhite

last time i checked the i3/i5/7 were better than dual quadcore.
http://www.tomshardware.com/char…
The i3/5/7 has better memory bandwidth showing slight gains in media encoding and photoshop too over the dual quad core.
the standard dual quad core which was the best bang for buck was the Q6600, which was dual quad core @ 2.4ghz, but could very easily overclock to 3.2ghz (this was its main selling feature really). giving 12.8 ghz in total. But youve got to consider how optimised the software you are using is, for multi-core chips.
- I have a Q6600 hackintosh, see no need to upgrade for a little while....vaxorcist

Q6600 - £180-£200
Intel i3-540 - £88The intel i3 scores slightly higher in benchmarks. and is optimised more for modern software (like the adobe suite) with attention to hyper-threading.
half the price and slightly faster. no brainer really.

yeh im looking at mostly adobe creative suite, with video editing with 3d rendering. Just want something fairly speedy. Just want to make sure I get the right processor!
- Hombre_Lobo_20
Yeh man, think twice, buy once, thats the trick.
the i3 isnt too different in terms of power to the q6600, but its a lot cheaper.
its a decent processor, but if i were you (im currently looking to build a new system for a similar purpose to yours) id spend a little extra and go for the likes of the i7 or an i5 for 3D rendering.
Also remember I3/5/7 systems use DDR3 ram, thats if your building a system and if not its nice to know your getting some fast ram, compared to ddr2.

you are probably better off going with i3 (new technology). Quadcore is nice if you have applications that actually utilize the processor. Otherwise, the applications would be using one core.

seems like i3 may be better for mobile devices with graphics on the chip. not really necessary for workstations.
i ended up with a i7930.

What set up you got deathboy?
I'm looking to build an i7 system and interested in how you find it power wise. It handle adobe apps well?
Can't wait for a new computer, such a nice geeky feeling having a new computer that seems 10x faster than your precious one.
- an SSD boot drive will make your current machine feel 10x fasteracescence
- hell yeh!
but costs lots, but i suppose you would see a huge change!Hombre_Lobo_2 - the 64 ssd i got for like 120 bucks . figure for boot drive thats not too baddeathboy

i went premium on a few things that were unnecessary because i liked them like top notch mobo/and pricey case:
HD 1T|WD 7K 64M SATAIII WD1002FAEX
CPU COOL XIGM|Dark Knight-S1283V R
CASE SILVERSTONE| FT02B RT
MB MSI| BIG BANG XPOWER X58
VGA SAPPHIRE| 100290SR HD5870 RT
PSU CORSAIR|CMPSU-850HX 850W RT
CPU INTEL|CORE I7 930 2.80G R
MEM 2Gx3|CORSA XMS TR3X6G1600C7 G R

HD 1T|SAMSUNG HD103SJ 32M 7K %
MNTR NEC|LCD 23" 14MS EA231WMI-BK
DVD BURNER LITE-ON | IHAS424-98 RYea my old mobo or processor died. so i decided to jsut replace those things, for like $150 bucks with a older duocore wolfdale/asusMB and give the machine to a friend and build a whole new box or myself. had to reward myself for such a good deed right?
- yea and it works like a charm. fast stock, way fast OC'ddeathboy
- what overclocking did you manage? thanks for post btwHombre_Lobo_2
- i have a profile that is a 3.57ish with ram 1800.. cant remember rest. went back too stock becuase under stress was gettign blue screendeathboy
- getting blue screen. think i just gotta up the qpi voltage a nudge.. just haven't had time to try it with good stress testdeathboy
- ah cool, yeh upping the voltage (carefully!) is the done thing. thanks dude :)Hombre_Lobo_2

Niiiiiiiiiiiice deathboy.
solid state, 6gig ram, i7 930, 5870!That will last ya :)
You gaming on that beast? Bet the games run well smooth. (is there an innuendo in that or is something wrong with me?)Im looking at building a very similiar set up actually. 6gig ram i7 etc.
- deathboy0
hombre go for it the 930 seems like bang for buck chip with OCing for sure. you cna likely pimp a 930 good ram for decent buck. I think my build including IPS monitor came around 2200 with soem premiums on parts. Could probably build one for far cheaper now. I did buy all brand new equipment since i gave everything away to a buddy. If you reuse your case or powersupply or soemthing you could build a new one pretty cheap. And considering the gulftown chips are still like $999 and software vs hardware a i7 quad would set up pretty good for a bit. Just get a mobo that will take a hexacore
- ahh hexacore is the next thing? future proofing?Hombre_Lobo_2
- yup. always gotta plan for the future... even though intel will likely change socket size ...deathboy
- designmachine0
Be safe quad-core
- Hombre_Lobo_20
Yes deathboy!
Good to that there are some non mac geeks around here. Starcraft too, that's pretty high up on the geek scale too! Nice :)
thanks for the hexacore info, good to know.
Got an IPS monitor too? What did you go for?
- http://www.newegg.co… really nice monitor, so far really happy with itdeathboy
- yup im a bit of a nerd.deathboy
- nerds FTW! :)Hombre_Lobo_2

SSD's FTW!!! I'd tempt you to buy another and run them in RAID like me... but thats more $$

I7 laptop 15' fucking rips!!! Way faster than my quad tower 2.66, it's never crashed
