How do they define long term unemployed?
In Australia you are classed as this if you have been on unemployment benefits for 12 months or more. I just did some quick maths and our current rate is about 1.5% of overall population but is starting to lessen as our economy is improving.

Really, that low? Current rate in the U.S. is over 9%, and something like 17% of the entire population when you factor in people who gave up looking.

When I got laid off years ago I didn't ever *realize I could file for unemployment. I think poeple should be super thankful it's there at all.
When you step back, it's sort of amazing all the things the government can provide for you [and the nation]. Just wish it were handled better sometimes...
