I've been Googling for over an hour and can't seem to get a straight answer.
Got an iMac with broken superdrive (failed in a heatwave and hasn't worked since) - I run my entire OS off an external USB 1.5tb drive
Can I get bootcamp and windows 7 onto this drive or not?
Bootcamp assistant says no.
I run crossover and parallels at the moment; they're complete shit.
Anyone with experience with this?

Maybe I just need to replace my Superdrive... groan.

Windows can be a bit fussy about what you install it off and to, there should be some workarounds on the net if you look.
If it works on a regular PC the same procedure should work on a Mac, all bootcamp does is emulate a traditional bios instead of EFI and provide drivers for the trackpad/camera etc

Windows doesn't like being booted from external drives because BIOS doesn't like external drives. I tried it myself with a MacBook pro.
WinOS boots off a CD/DVD drive because the those drives are considered part of the system - BIOS checks mounted system hardware and preps the OS for boot.
WinOS will boot off a network BIOS, but that will be hard to do within the constraints of the bootcamp software.
PIZZA is right about workarounds, but be prepared for some slightly complicated command line works...

Clone your mac drive onto the external and put windows on the internal?
