It appears .max files are hard to convert to cinema 4d, but .3ds files are not.

I've searched as well, nothing that i know of.
In the past, I've paid a few bucks to a 3Dmax person to convert to 3DS.

Yep... looks like that is what Im going to tell the project manager.

Max is a proprietary format, I believe. There is no translator.

I have no problems opening 3ds files in C4D...
In the past I've had TurboSquid convert files for me. You may want to shoot them an email.
Hope that's helpful.
- what versions do you use of each?honestly
- I'm on the latest C4D, but I've been able to open/import 3ds files for at least 2 or 3 earlier versions... Almost all of the files have come from TurboSquid, and I think they even list their 3ds models as C4D compatible...digitalswarm
- are listed as C4D compatible anyway.digitalswarm

Not quite sure of the technicalities but I've Always been able to open .3ds files but not .max - don't know the difference between these sorts of files though

pirated copy of max running inside an isolated virtual machine (then you don't have to give a shit about the pile of trojans you'll get), if they are gonna be dicks about their file format then just steal it.

Export as a fbx file. This works most of the time.
