Sounds like he's horribly clinically depressed. Which is a drag. That's a horrible way to feel.

I think some people who attain a certain amount of success, after you've bought a bunch of cool toys and shit, realize true happiness lies in your relationships with other people. Unfortunately when you're really rich and famous you can't trust people at all, which creates a real mental conflict. You end up stuck in your big house alone, mistrusting people who say they're your friends, without anything to do but stare at the sky and wonder how it all went so completely wrong.
Just my 2¢ Cheers!

His solo albums were good until after No Jacket Required, the rest just horrid.

I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that I really didn't understand any of their work. It was too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. He puts aside the CD and takes out
another one. I think "Invisible Touch" is the group's undisputed masterpiece. He puts on the song and gestures for them to follow him into the bedroom. It's an epic meditation on intangibility, at the same time it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship and sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to "Land of Confusion." In this
song, Phil Collins addresses the problem of abusive political authority. "In Too Deep" is the most moving pop song of the 1980s about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting.
Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Phill Collins solo efforts seem to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying in a narrower way, especially
songs like "In the Air Tonight" and "Against All Odds." But I also think that Phill Collins works better within the confines of the group than as a solo artist-and I stress the word artist. This is "Sussudio," a great, great song, a personal favorite.- Wild guess here, you're a Phil Collins fan?CygnusZero4

That's sad. He's obviously suffering from depression...sad for his kids too. Never much liked his solo stuff but have complete respect for him as a drummer.

Say what you will, I can't help but respect Phil Collins as a no bullshit kind of pop musician. By that I mean he's probably the only guy with multiple platinum selling records who is bald, not especially good looking, and essentially looks like a middle manager at Staples or something.
Sure, Lady Gaga may write her own songs, but she does seem to feel the need to flash her tits and ass like she needs the help. With Phil Collins, on the other hand, you can pretty much be sure his successes were all the result of his musical abilities.
Can you imagine a Phil Collins making it today? They'd probably find some guy to front for him like Milli Vanilli.
- Agreed. And here and there he's made some / played on some killer tracks that stand the test of time.NonEntity
- There are a lot of successful bands like this though. Look at Rush, 35mil sold, ugly as shit.CygnusZero4
