found a cheap ticket for the holidays. a solo trip. recommend any cheap places to stay within a cool neighborhood. i.e. no car. not slumming, but not picky.

hmmm..
what are you looking to do?
Beach, Clubs, Bars, Relax?you can be by the beach or more urban area, SD is kinda far apart and it's a drag to move w/ no car.

I've stayed here. Rooms are small, but clean and quiet. It's in little italy, an easy walk to lots of good stuff, including the water. A bit of a drive to the sweet beaches, though.

that's a nice area too, lots of design studios around there.
kiiiiindaa walking distance from downtown (15 blocks?) without all the noise. Lots of restaurants, and farmers market on the weekends.Let us know when you are in town, maybe we can organize a meetup (and by we, I mean Akrok)

thanks nb. still looking into it. i guess i could rent a car and drive down, but that would be more expensive from the looks of things. been down there once and just remember it being pretty tough to get around.

yeh really it's not too bad if you're in little italy, banker's hill, gaslamp, east village, golden hill, or south park (and parts of north park). All are within walking (or biking) distance to downtown and bars/venues, and it's not *too* terrible to catch a bus to the beach. If you're just looking for beach times, then there's plenty of places in the pacific beach (college-y, bars, and STDs), Ocean Beach (hippy), and La Jolla (ritzy). Also, there's airbnb.com if you're looking for low-budget stays.
