I used Logic Express for my record (aside from the mastering) and I gotta say for $200 it's a great piece of software if you're on a Mac. Ableton is really outstanding (super intuitive and fun to use with some terrific features) but I couldn't afford it.
- If you're planning on DJing def. go with Ableton Live.citysurgical

acid pro 7

- honestly, you are honestly suggesting Acid?autoflavour
- whats next, fruity loops?autoflavour
- easy to use and midi capable now, great starter program. though i have abletonhonestly
- and i added it as an option not yet mentioned, some people haven't the patience or their skillsets differhonestly
- i have a friend who only uses open air mics and audacity, but he just records his own loops and flows over thathonestly
- though his other friend uses protools so he's obviously the talent not the technicianhonestly

ABLETON 8 Suite is amazing.
I run Ableton 8, Logic, Protools LE and Reason 4.. and I am always going back to Ableton.
depends on the music you are wanting to make, but if its electronic, you cant go wrong with ableton.
Logic is good, but requires a reasonable machine to run it properly..
Protools is good, but lacks plugins and the plugins are crazy expensive.. also you have to buy their hardware.. which is good hardware, but over priced ..
Reason 4.. meh, maybe rewired into Ableton for something.
Reaktor is also good... but works best when feed into something like Ableton, protools etc..

It depends on what you want to do. Do you need to record and mix? Then Pro Tools, Digital Performer, Logic, Ableton, etc. are what you need.
Are you trying to perform live or do live mixes? Then you might try Logic, Ableton, Serato Final Scratch (for DJ-ing), etc.
Are you trying to write music or make beats? If so, a lot of people get by with just FL studio and some sort of cheap pro tools LE rig. I use Reason 5 and Record 1.5 myself. Those two do everything I need so far.

Thanks for recommendation. Will look in to those. And not sure what I want to do.

I have logic8 (non express). How do people DJ with Logic?
- You wouldn't DJ with logic, but it does have a performance mode that models guitar amps and organ sounds.TenaciousG
- Logic on stage is more to replace or complement actual instruments and amps.TenaciousG
- got it :)sherm

Sure.
If you're not sure what you want to do yet, seriously take a look at garageband (if you have a mac). It's simple enough to get you started with both recording and writing. And it's cheap.
After you get good at it, or decide you want some more power (and want to spend the dough), look into the software perviously mentioned.
