Sens. John Ensign (R-Nev.), Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) and Scott Brown (R-Mass.) introduced a bill Thursday aimed at stopping WikiLeaks by making it illegal to publish the names of military or intelligence community informants.
The so-called SHIELD Act (Securing Human Intelligence and Enforcing Lawful Dissemination) would amend a section of the Espionage Act that already forbids publishing classified information on U.S. cryptographic secrets or overseas communications intelligence — i.e., wiretapping. The bill would extend that prohibition to information on HUMINT, human intelligence, making it a crime to publish information “concerning the identity of a classified source or informant of an element of the intelligence community of the United States,” or “concerning the human intelligence activities of the United States or any foreign government” if such publication is prejudicial to U.S. interests.

"Clearly this is a person who has a beef with the United States. Apparently there’s some reports he’s got some information on a major American bank that he’s threatening to drop at the beginning of the year. Why he’s doing these things, exactly, I don’t know.”
"Well, obviously he doesn’t think he himself fits into the whole question of transparency. I think one can only conclude, based on what we’ve seen that he is hugely anti-American, somewhat anti-Capitalistic"

- Thoughts crimes! KILL KILLabettertomorrow
- I'd say he's pro-capitalist and anti-monopoly. So he's about as anti-ameican as Teddy Roosevelt on that scoreTheBlueOne
- Of course, conservatives and monopolists hated Teddy then, still do.TheBlueOne

^ clearly they should get these brainiacs to a facility right away so they can solve the cancer puzzle. I mean they're not currently preoccupied with being 'journalists'.

Amazon, PayPal & Twitter have all pussied out. So I'd say the whole Wild West Internet phase is over. Fuck it. Bring on the end of net neutrality, doesn't fucking matter much does it.

So when Twitter is involved in taking down the Iranian regime it's all fucking flowers and sunshine and let's turn every avatar green. When it comes to exposing the malfeasance of the US Government? Under the carpet.

This is a big nod and wink from the US Gov. to all the other corrupted regimes the world over. "Your welcome guys!' 'Hey Iran...HOws it hangin?!...China! waz up?! oh yeah"

Re: Putting a Face to it.
Well, there are obvious downsides, and I'd posit that putting a face to it is probably the work of his opponents as much as it is his ego. I mean if you oppose something you WANT to put a face to it, makes it easier to demonize than some sort of amorphous cloud of leakers/hackers out there.
It's kinda like politics/warfare 101. The US Govt, etc. HAS to demonize wikileaks and the shortest direct route is to put a name and face to it. I mean my mother knows who wikileaks is now. Ask her about the Pirate Party or 4chan and she stares at you like you have two heads.
So either Julian has a massive ego and he;s going along with it, or he's setting himself up as a decoy knowing full well that even if he goes down the process won;t be effected too much. Probably a bit of both.

Did you guys read this article someone posted earlier?
https://zunguzungu.wordpress.com…
The idea is that Wikileaks is less concerned with the leaks themselves and more in provoking a breakdown of communication and effectiveness between the various interest groups that make up the government.
Techdirt has some interesting reads on it too.

Scottish SciFi author Charles Stross had a good blog about this, worth the read and the brain gummage...

Of course none of the intellectualizing means a thing if the governments of the world succeed in shutting down Wikileaks and everyone forgets about it and moves on. But I do think this kind of activity is going to be around for the long term.
