Well, there are obvious downsides, and I'd posit that putting a face to it is probably the work of his opponents as much as it is his ego. I mean if you oppose something you WANT to put a face to it, makes it easier to demonize than some sort of amorphous cloud of leakers/hackers out there.
It's kinda like politics/warfare 101. The US Govt, etc. HAS to demonize wikileaks and the shortest direct route is to put a name and face to it. I mean my mother knows who wikileaks is now. Ask her about the Pirate Party or 4chan and she stares at you like you have two heads.
So either Julian has a massive ego and he;s going along with it, or he's setting himself up as a decoy knowing full well that even if he goes down the process won;t be effected too much. Probably a bit of both.
