I need to create an animation to be projected through a projector of 800 x 600px size. However, the client want's it supplied on a DVD.
As far as I'm aware DVD's can only be 4:3 or 16:9. So how would this work?

media file on a dvd?

800x600 is 4:3 (that is a ratio)
plays automatically:

looping:

^ I'm familiar with DVD STUDIO, however when you bring in the footage the track can only be 720 x 576 or 1024 x 576, so what's happening to the 800 x 600, is it being squashed?

you've got some reading to do
http://documentation.apple.com/e…"Graphics programs use square pixels. If you set the dimensions of a graphic to 720 x 480 pixels (the NTSC frame size), you will notice that the drawing area of the graphic in the graphics program is not a 4:3 aspect ratio (it is a bit short). If you set a graphic to PAL dimensions (720 x 576 pixels), the drawing area you see in your graphics program is taller than 4:3.
Anything you put in the graphic will be distorted (either vertically stretched or compressed, depending on your video standard) when viewed on a video monitor. If you draw a square, it will look like a rectangle. In some cases, the distortion is not great enough to worry about, but in most cases you should build your graphics with the distortion in mind.
To compensate for pixel differences between graphics and video, you need to build the graphics at one size and then rescale them to the appropriate video dimensions, as shown in the following table."

actually, i dont know if that article will help.
but it seems that you do have some issue with square vs. rectangle pixels
do you know what the animation comp is using?

Do they want it supplied on a DVD so it can be played in a DVD player? Or a data DVD?
If it's playing from a PAL DVD player, it will only be outputting 720x576 anyway.
- DVD player, exactly thats my pointbroxybluenose
- If the DVD player outputs 720x576, the projector's resolution is somewhat irrelevant.********
- what will happen? distortion?broxybluenose
- Projectors generally have a method of displaying a matte when you connect a DVD player. It's extremely common.********

There was a thread about aspect ratios on QBN not too long ago. I believe the link posted had a conversion scale and other useful stuff.

DUDE.
just put the 800x600 comp inside a larger (720p) window
the black will not be projected?

The animation doesn't have to be 800x600. The projector will interpret the 720x572 pixel signal from the DVD player just fine, without distortion or cropping.
The solution here is to create your animation at 720x572.
- ... or any size larger if you're ok with the projector scaling the images from the DVD player.********

A projector with a native resolution of 800x600 will upscale your 720x576 image to fit.
DVD is Standard Definition it will have a maximum of about 576 lines.
The video on the DVD can be whatever aspect ratio you want it to be, but if its not 720x576 it will either be squashed or letterboxed or pillarboxed by the projector.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nat…

actually this will work just fine, ive done things like these
masked as a circle so we can project on a circular screen, then with the projector lens you zoom in and out to make it fit
