as someone who hires from time to time and is used as a ref, I'd disagree. part of hiring is deciding if the perspective employee will add value and or be profitable to the company. asking and answering questions does not fall in the slander/libel category. being honest about work performance and how someone might have added or taken away from productivity base on their actions is pertinent information in decision making.
just ripping into someone without cause is not legal in employment, but being honest is.- nothing to do with your question though freshdude. i'd say 3.bjladams

Had 5 ready - but most potential employers ask for 3. Then I chose the best 3 for the company I was interviewing for, contacted them and let them know. (they obviously already agreed to be references for me)

whichever ones make you look best, if 10 people will praise you why not, if only 3 will, don't list all 10. only offer the reference contacts on request and under the permission of the referenced
