Well I cant get a job.. Probably because I'm under qualified and still new to everything.
Ive been going after publications to work as an assistant photo editor and well.. I think my resume looks like an ass hole! What are some of the things you've done to make your resume look better then just white paper?
Ive been playing with the idea of building everything into some sort of magazine layout! Poor idea?

bad idea. make the resume readable. make the cover letter stand out.
Cast your net wider if you can't find a job at your first choice(s).

It's always better to play it safe when designing your resume.

as far as your prospective employer is concerned, your design skills will be evident in your previous employment history.
chances are they will be going through 50 resumes. do you really think they are going to pick you over a guy who has a plain resume, but has more experience, just because yours was prettier?
first make sure it's easy to read and the most important things are highlighted in the beginning.
Remember that nobody cares which primary school or high school you went to, or to what level you studied in high school, or what medal you got for swimming the 100m in the 4th grade. Only put tertiary qualifications.
Keep your contact details simple. Name, phone number and email address. No need for a home address. Nobody is coming over for dinner.
Put your work most recent work qualifications first. Structure it by, year, title, company, breif description of duties. dont waffle and dont lie. it all comes out in the end.
Then you can put some filler like, software or development skills.
Some employers like to see hobbies and interests, most dont give a shit.
References. "Will provide on demand". A lot of times they will just call your previous employer and speak to somebody they know there, without tell you.
now your resume serves its purpose.
how do you make it stand out?
I put comments or "call outs" next to interesting employment history items. these are usually in a conversational tone and it helps to differentiate me from other applicants, because i now stand out as a person, not a piece of paper.
just remember, designing a resume is like any other design task. the function is to display your qualifications. the visual aesthetic should interfere with this. even if your magazine is shit hot.

i agree. improve your portfolio not your resume. your resume should be clean and readable. although... I did do a resume with infographics for fun.I send it either as a second page or don't.

Every interview I've had has been because I designed my CV well. NOt crazy over the top, just using a solid grid structure and some flourishes to make it stand out from the 100 other CVs. Also using the same styling across your cover letter.
The mistake people make is that somebody is actually going to read your CV.
It needs to stand out

Flourishes? Really?
I would bin it.
What you need to understand is that the person reading your resume is exactly that. A person.
You need to make a connection with that person.
Flourishes will not make this connection.
