My girlfriend is being transfered there in a few weeks with work. I'm thinking of going myself but has anyone got and experience of going out there as a european and trying to get a design job?

yeah, a working permit is always better.

No work visa, is it possible to get one out there if someone gives me a job?

I believe the company would have to sponsor you or apply for one for you. Might wanna check on that first... Americans are not that friendly when it comes to 'illegal immigrants'

what kind of work do you do?

NY loves European designers. You should be fine. I'm sure you'll quickly meet others who can recommend a good lawyer in helping you stay here.

I've found the visa thing has tightened up a lot since I've been here (3 years) - with the high unemployment you have to fight to prove that you have a unique skill set / only you can do the job.

He's not Swiss, though, Douglas. Will he stay?

its going to be very difficult for you. i came over to NY earlier in the year. I have an o-1 (i think..) visa which was paid for me by my comapny. it cost them a lot. but even with that my wife cant work. she has to wait until i apply for a greencard next year. so there is no way you will be legally allowed to work on your girlfriends visa.also there is no way you will be legally allowed to stay even here more than 3 months, let alone work, without some kind of visa. you wont even get an interview - let alone a job - until you have the right paper work (unless the people you do work for break the law).
if you get a job without a visa, it is possible they will sponsor your visa, but it will cost them a lot (in terms of time, laywers fees as well as cash), so unless they love you, or are a huge company (mine is) dont even think about it.
the good news after all that is i have friends who have come over on the same visa as me and it took them about 3/4 months to organise and cost them a few thousand.
and when you get here its fucking amazing.

Found out 2 days ago, it wasn't my girlfriends choice. She is American and has to go back due to visa issues
– AlexandaI call BS on this. This kind of thing doesn't happen so sudden. Usually there are longer time frame to adjust for move etc.
Esp if you are transfer visa which rather is accommodating.

I was out there for 3 months this summer. Every company I spoke to wanted a working VISA already in place - they don't want the cost or hassle of sorting one out for you at present. I'm looking at becoming a LTD company so I can sponsor myself.
Good luck, and if you do make it out there joelski's right... the NYC chicks are HOT!

If she's American, you can marry her and become a citizen. No problem. You won't even need to dump her!

No BS, she has two weeks working time left here then she has to go otherwise she cant work and loses her job.
I just wanted some advice if anyone has ever headed to NYC and managed to secure a job/visa over there. As she is American she can work over there without any hassle but the situation will be reversed and I wont have a visa.

Get a fiance visa (K1) .. you have 90 days to tie the knot and can work immediately.

If you end up hating each other after 90 days, you get to leave.
