My wife and I have been talking about it forever... Have any of you been there? Did you go on your own or 'tour'? Any suggestions?

Isn't it on the verge of economic collapse with constant rioting going on?

I'd say don't do a tour unless there's lots of specific places you have to go to. Pick a nice small island and do excursions from there. Don't know if there are any bargains to due to the meltdown. Tourist industry is probably insulated to a degree.

Thanks Fax... I am more of a historic places type, while my wife is more of a nature/beaches... so it would have to be something that combines both.
- some of them got nude beaches.akrok

Been to Mikonos, Naxos and Santorini.
All nice.
From my experice:
Mikonos: Quite a lot of very camp people, nudist beaches, loads of parties, not particularly cheap, AMAZING beaches.
Naxos: A lot more affordable, more of a family feeling to it, some really nice beaches.
Santorini: Beatiful beaches and really nice place overall, quite expensive overall.

Not sure I'd ever want to go back to Athens, it left the impression that it was one huge sprawling dusty, hot, noisy, dirty city. I did get a boat to Andros from there though, that's quite a nice island, not pushed so hard as a tourist island so you havn't got the idiots on tour to deal with, lots of nice places to explore if you hire a jeep or bike. Did a cheap deal to Kos before, there are some really tacky places catering for the Brits and Germans but also there are some nice places if you get into the island exploring. Good for a day trip over to Turkey too.

Santorini was dope but I really loved Rhodes. Walled cities are pretty cool and Rhodos, the capital was very nice. Also drove up north of Athens to Meteora.
There's a bunch of these monasteries nestled in the area, and all are fairly open to the public. Athens was nice but we have a friend there, so I got to see places tucked away from normal view. Otherwise the city is huge and a bit daunting.
- I got married on Santorini. awesome. pure awesome.zenmasterfoo

I have a house on Rhodes, you can stay there.
Santorini is my favourite holiday island.

I've been to Rhodes, Santorini, Mykonos, Athens, Corfu, Katakolon (Olympia), and Navplion.
Athens is shit. The rest were good. Katakolon (Olympia) was pretty boring, I must say. Santorini was magical – but outside of Oia, there doesn't seem like much to do other than relax and enjoy some beautiful scenery (rough life...)
Rhodes was dope.
Mykonos was... again... sort of magical. Tourist season was winding down and I sat and had dinner at a completely empty restaurant nestled into the peak of the shore with my wife. The sun went down over the water just in front of us. Ahhh... just writing it brings back the memories of the taste of the food.
We only did a couple of tours, but the rest we did on our own. It's best when you can wander a bit and just fucking end up somewhere. Those are the moments you cherish forever.
Do it!!!
- Thanks for the tips!!! Now, please keep telling us about that sunset... ;)

I think I might start planning it for next year and surprise the missus! Any suggestions on hotels, tickets, etc...? How expensive is it once you are there? Food, stay, prostitutes...?

OSFA you handsome son of a gun!
(wish that was true but someone wont post a pic in the mugs thread.. :P)my and the gf went to the island of crete for a week a while back, stayed in bali -

its a fairly quiet fishing village. really nice place. our hotel was literally about 120 metres from that beach pictured above.
it has 5 different coves with different restaurants and beaches.its very non-clubby, unlike some other parts of crete like malia, massive clubland scene. We saw some horrific sights on the plane on the way over, it was bad, complete inbred clubbers, rowdy retards. fortunately off the plane me and my lady went west and they all went east! :D
have fun!
