Is it possible to completely reset it then restore the backup?
I've been googling and can't find if it is possible after a total clean up.
Anyone done it before?

Yes, I saw that,
but I asked if it was possible to put back the backup after resetting it.

I think if you backup in itunes, then do the factory reset, the next time you plug it in it will ask if you want to use your last backup or start over.
90% sure. :)

When I installed a resh install and restored, the phone acted very slowly and some of the Apps would not show up. I found it was easier to just wipe the iPhone and install a clean iOS then manually add the apps, photos, music and videos back onto it.
MobileMe took care of the iCal and Contacts, but you can add those manually too from your Address Book on your Mac.
Bit of a hassle, but it made sure the iPhone was working correctly.

I wish I could downgrade my 3G to iOS 3, it runs like shit with iOS4

Yes you can. I just did it about three weeks ago when I wanted to restore everything because it was just running so slow. I backed it up in itunes and and did the reset. However I did have to upgrade to IOS4 when I did the factory restore doesnt give you the option to not. After it was done it asked me I wanted to use latest back up and I said yup. And it was done.
