@WeLoveNoise - "Was too fancy tho, kinda wasted 6yrs of my life"
I totally see what your saying dude. With kung fu, there are so many styles you get some more performance / showy (wushu) styles that arent really good combat styles.The other main problem with kung fu, it was sooo popular and sooo famous you get a lot of complete idiots pretending to teach good kung fu, when its complete bullshit or watered down bad technique.
Ive done short stick mantis training.
- do ur research to find a solid instructor and style that suits you. the style i train now is pretty much dirty boxing. very functional.dirtydesign

Come here,
I'll kick your ass,ps: I know photoshop!!
- Hombre_Lobo0
@WeLoveNoise
ive done short stick, but other than short and long stick im never really a fan of weapon forms, i much prefer empty hand stuff.- yeh same here although i did a weapon in sai and fan and fan has got to be one of the best unrated weapons of all time lolWeLoveNoise
- under-rated meant to sayWeLoveNoise
- haha awesome! ive never seen a fan form, would love to!
Hombre_Lobo - empty hand... unless you have permits to carry your weapons everywhere.Amicus
- Hombre_Lobo0
and yeh @WeLoveNoise
krav maga looks wiked, looks no nonsense. i like that a lot.Mantis stuff and wing chun stuff is like that, just knock your opponents guard down and go for the eyes or throat.
- Hombre_Lobo0
Amicus im still finding some good youtube videos for ya of northern mantis :) (not to be confused with southern mantis!)
There are a few, but they all look a bit soft (im sure you'll agree from a karate background!), not like the club i went to.
There some clips of bruce lee doing it though.
- we train in a park where people also practice mantis. looks fun.dirtydesign

I've also practised Ving Tsun / Wing Tsung, in the Netherlands, for a while. www.vtkf.nl. Great fighting technique, very minimal and clever. But i've been trained in Taekwondo for 15 years, so those are my roots I guess. Don't believe in superiority but i do like kicking :-). Recently went with my school to Korea to train with grand masters. It was amazing. I have a video if you are interested, shot with 5D mk II, inbetween training. The martials art bits are at the end though:

Some decent 7 star northern mantis application stuff, from Brendan Lai
If you look at 4 minutes its a very good example of the system,
you strike/counter your opponent, make them block (if they dont you hit them), then you capitalize on their block.Again from what ive seen similar to wing chun.
- ving tsun never goes under, always over the arms, well that's what I was thought.Jurre
- taught I mean, sorry. To me this does not look like Ving Tsun / Wing Tsung :-)Jurre
- wing chun definitely goes under. its in the last form.dirtydesign
- ah ok. But prefarably over, again, this is what I was taught I am no VT expert.Jurre
- Hombre_Lobo0
@jurre
Really, never go under opponents guard?interesting stuff.
I think if your close enough to your opponent and are trapping that front hand you're safe to attack the body, without being exposed.Thanks for the info dude.
Your vid is ace! i have only just got to the taekwondo bit, but all the general footage before it is lovely, really chilled and enjoyable. lets see some TKD now :D
- haha tnx. Well lineages differ of course. There is big risk if you go under the hands, you might trapped with them.Jurre
- Your welcome dude!
yeh totally on the trap.Hombre_Lobo
- _niko0
easy to discount it as ineffective in this day and age of mma, but this mofo is on another level all together:
- dirtydesign0
youtube the wooden dummy forms of wing chun.
you'll see the 'under' attacks.- ooo, interesting, cheers dude.Hombre_Lobo
- i made a wooden dummy for my a level project. made out of an old telegraph poleWeLoveNoise
- id love to get one, but nyc apartment is way too tight. train on it at my coaches place in bk.dirtydesign
- Jurre0
if you are interested in wing tsung / ving tsun, or martial arts in genera i recommend this movie: ip man
Very accurate and technically correct Ving Tsun, it still is a movie of course, but impressive.
(first fight 5.55 - there should be a fight within 10 minutes in any movie, but hey,that's me ;-)Also watch the final fight. Chinese vs japanese style (taekwondo looks very much like the karate displayed here).
- donny yen?
if so he is ace!Hombre_Lobo - yeah, donnie yen rules! So does this movie :-)Jurre
- looks good, again as ive said a million times! a lot of hand trapping and striking looks like mantis! good ole kung fu! :DHombre_Lobo
- i am curious about the mantis style. will dive into that.Jurre
- donny yen?

@NIKO!
Im pleased you linked that video, i saw it and thought the same, he is just so switched on, very sharp.Also i wouldnt say kung fu is ineffective in terms of MMA, ive found over the years its hard to compare kung fu/karate etc to things like kick boxing/mma etc, as one is a sport, ones a self defense.
In kung fu you train to go for eyes, neck etc because its self defense, you cant in mma obviously as its a sport. If someone jumps you in the street you dont have gloves on to cushion heavy strikes when blocking like in mma, and you also have the opportunity to grab your opponent, so its very different. (obviously in UFC you have open handed gloves which makes for more possibilities as opposed to boxing sports)
Also, upon recently starting thai boxing ive found the big difference in wearing boxing gloves is that i feel detached from the thai boxing when i remove my gloves.
At kung fu you rarely wear gloves, you go training do kung fu and when you walk home you still like a kung fu practitioner.
When i go thai boxing i put on gloves, i feel like im thai boxing. I take them off and i feel i dont feel like im a thai boxer. Bizarre, and its just something i need to get used to, but thats what ive found.- well, MMA probably prepares you best for a real fight, because of ground work as well.Jurre
- oh yeh i agree, the one thing really lacking in kung fu is any form of grappling. and fights can often go to the ground.Hombre_Lobo
- having said that, id rather get good at striking and finish a fight before that happens (results may vary!)Hombre_Lobo
- Hombre_Lobo0
@jurre
im pleased you said in TKD they dont have great hands, i wouldnt want to insult someone and say it, but i would agree. I too have a couple of mates who practice TKD and they also learn wing chun to compliment it! Good call :)- understanding ones weakness is very important :-). People who practice one style and think they are the best..Jurre
- .. get there ass kicked sooner or later. I've spracticed judo, tkd, ving tsun and kickboxing.Jurre
- there = theirJurre
- Good man :D i get sick of talking to close minded martial artists. If you cant try other things and be open minded, you wont be great!Hombre_Lobo
- agreed! theres a lot of politics in martial arts. even internally within wing chun,dirtydesign
- Hombre_Lobo0
Georgeslll,
i know your style is feared throughout many towns, but i assure you my style is greater than your 'bum them while they sleep' style!- So, I seee you've heard of my silent napalm kickgeorgesIII
- Jurre0
@ hombre_lobo
I agree (as i said in the comment above). I am interested in all martial arts, but I've practised tkd since i was 11. My current teacher (Jose Andrade) has had Krav Maga, Wing Chun and other trainings so he will never claim superiority. Whatever style you practice, if the teacher is arrogant and tell you his style is the best. RUN. Inflated ego is not what you need in a fight. It will make you loose :-) Also sparring against any other martial art will give insight in your own (style;s) weaknesses. Happy to agree mr Hombre_lobo :-)
- Hombre_Lobo0
@jurre
I hope you are female, because you are the bomb and are turning me on!yeh man, schools which claim they have an unstoppable style are gonna look stupid sooner or later.
i was showing my thai boxing instructor (a die hard thai boxing obsessive!) some mantis stuff last night and he was really liking it, and could see how useful it could be if your gloveless - thats how you want to be, open minded!
- Jurre0
@ hombre_lobo
unlike the founder of Ving Tsun, I am not :-) Sorry to dissapoint ;-)
I also like that martials arts have taught me self-discipline and respect, which I found very impressive in Korea. The grand master (Grand mastr Hur) is avery inspiring man, not just on the level of martial arts.Good call on the with / without boxing gloves hand techniques, very different. All good teachers remain open minded, the learning never stops. Cheers man, hope you enjoy your weekend, I am going to relax in the park :-)
- yeh, i wonder she was hot, probably not, probably had forearms of a farmer!
Have fun dude!Hombre_Lobo - tnx, haha arms of a farmer, that cracked me. Now if she looked like zang ziyi...Jurre
