I have found an old catalogue in a junk shop from 1938, and would really like to use some of the illustrations in my work. I just wondered if anyone knew anything about image copyright issues, and what I would need to do about this. I can't find any reference to the company on the internet and the products are unbranded. Do you think it is safe to use?

we have worked under the 'orphaned work' guideline that if the creator or owner is difficult to find or impossible to contact, it is in the free domain and can be used until the owner presents himself at which point the work must be removed or the owner gives permission to carry on. there has to be a legitimate show that there was no person to track down and that research was done- you cant just rip a photo out of rolling stone and say that there's no name on it, but that does not sound like what you are doing.
before 1989 official copyright lasted 70 years past the creators death.

To be honest, I think the images are probably generic enough products such as an iron from 1938 without a brand name that I doubt that the copyright would be an issue, but just wondered if anyone had any advice. Done some more searching and can find no reference to the company or products.

doubt you'll get caught.

Out of curiosity, what's the company's name?
