There are settings. System Preferences > Energy Saver. I hope that helps.

ditch sleep mode, it's the end of times. fucking crashes, does into a coma, you name the problem sleep mode does it.

I never had any problem with my machine going into sleep mode. (Macbook Pro, 3 years old)
Maybe it's an app or program you're running while it goes to sleep? Not sure... Play with the settings I guess. =\

it must be me. i've owned 6 machines and had another 7 as 'my machine' at places i've worked since '94 and every single time i've thought 'lets try sleep mode again' it bites me on the arse. the usual thing is it goes to sleep and never comes back. sleeping beauty mode.

See if one of the rams hasn't come loose. Happened to me.

How old is the iMac and how much ram is there in it?
A few years back Apple changed sleep mode so that it saved the contents of ram to disk instead of just keeping it in memory, on older macs this made sleep mode a lot slower than it used to be (used to be near instant).
If it is a white iMac (alu ones are fast even with 4 gig ram) you might want to look into disabling the ram saving.

What kind of machine? laptop after closing lid, desktop on idle? Does it wake OK?

I'm having more issues these days waking the machine up... takes ages...

My new iMac sometimes does not wake up from it's sleep, I must then restart it...
