Life itself is meaningless. So, you know, expecting some deeper meaning from any career, whether it's designer, fireman, professional athlete, physician, preacher or philosopher, is as pointless as looking for some meaning in life.
We're all just trying to get on in an interesting fashion until we die. That's it. Nothing more or less.
Expecting meaning from life is an unrewarding activity.
- On the other hand, expecting a wild and vigorous sex life is a wonderful aspiration.boobs

Maybe for you it is, boobs.
But if no one tried, nothing would change. There would be no great advances in science, art, literature. No great historical figures.
Just a bunch of middlemen and designers.
- Oh c'mon. Designers have defined art literature and even sciences throughout recorded history.monospaced

you disrespect design and then quote steve jobs.
well done.

What exactly are you expecting? Celebrity status?

Jobs is a businessman, not a designer.
Johnathan Ives? He's spent his life making pretty containers.
Jobs is the one who allowed it and makes it happen.
- It takes a whole fucking team to do it... including designers.Amicus

All God does is watch us and kill us when we get boring. We must never, ever be boring.

I want to be marginal

Design is pretty damn boring.

if you have a passion for what you do and can live up to your definition of success while doing it, none of that matters.
i started heading down the graphic design path in college, then backed out because i felt similar to you. it turned out to be a good decision for me - but it still remains a casual interest for me, which is why i show up here.

Thanks for the advice, Steve.

you're right BoneCrusher, it's all meaningless marginal shit.
So stop whining and go do something meaningful. Like that mountaineer, Greg Mortenson or whatever his name is.

Thanks hans. I'm planning on it.

Having children will change your perspective.

What's the point?
BoneCrusher,
YOU earn money from your profession, and if you started working in design because YOU have a passion for it you'll have fun doing it.Must you define your self worth by the "points" not everyone else might not see? Stop caring about what others think of yourself, your profession and your interest(s). And just do it.
- Jobs beat me to it.
So I'll add: get better friends to evaluate your job and interest.
;pPeter
- Jobs beat me to it.

Once I asked myself the same question, What's the point? Seriously i had my head against the window of the Metro North thinking to myself I could have been a doctor ( my second career choice ), but after a few beers with a friend who is a doctor i realized that they have the same B.S. to deal with, and even he said that as a ER doc, he treats crack addicts most of the time. he doesn't save babies, he doesn't "change the world." But he has a long term plan for opening up a practice and doing what he loves. ( he has since joined a practice )
But anyway, I realized that I need to create, and that gives me fulfillment. I don't seek fulfillment from a banner campaigns, or a pharma ad. ( No judgment against them though ) I am 100% freelance and have a lot of pride in going from 0-100% every month. I use the commercial side of design to fund my personal projects. I paint and was represented by a gallery. I got through the down turn, etc etc.
I no longer ask what's the point.
