Design: what's the point?

Once I asked myself the same question, What's the point? Seriously i had my head against the window of the Metro North thinking to myself I could have been a doctor ( my second career choice ), but after a few beers with a friend who is a doctor i realized that they have the same B.S. to deal with, and even he said that as a ER doc, he treats crack addicts most of the time. he doesn't save babies, he doesn't "change the world." But he has a long term plan for opening up a practice and doing what he loves. ( he has since joined a practice )
But anyway, I realized that I need to create, and that gives me fulfillment. I don't seek fulfillment from a banner campaigns, or a pharma ad. ( No judgment against them though ) I am 100% freelance and have a lot of pride in going from 0-100% every month. I use the commercial side of design to fund my personal projects. I paint and was represented by a gallery. I got through the down turn, etc etc.
I no longer ask what's the point.
