I'm just beginning my career and learning slowly about professional printers.
How do you find good printers who will print special jobs, like metallic ink, embossing, or neon colors on quality paper?
How did you start out?

Peers.
You used to be able to find them at events put on by AIGA.
Here in Atlanta there's a printer's association.

Quick Answer: Simply call a few of your local printers and ask them for a tour of their facilities, they will be more than happy to show you and explain everything they do.
- +10000000000000 I do this every time I start using a new printer, best way to build up a good relationship quickly...rascuache

Another great resource -- building upon utopian's suggestion to call printers and ask for tours -- is to ask for print samples. If they're worth it they will send you a nice package highlighting their capabilities on different stocks and with different specialized processes. Enjoy.
