I haven't done this in a while, so I'm a bit out of the loop, but I'm now managing and doing the show promotions for a good friend's band.
Besides the obvious (Facebook, Myspace, Bandcamp, Twitter) what are some other vendors/outlets/ways in which people are marketing bands right now?

Moreover, what are some essentials to a press kit/marketing kit that I might not have thought of, besides:
• Pamphlet with bios, info, etc.
• LP or EP CD
• Stickers
• T-shirt

last.fm
itunes store / page
pitchfork
desktop / iphone / smartphone swagger (backgrounds, ringtonez, etc)
posters
other gear / apparel (hats, sweaters, keyfobs, etc)IMO all of this ephemera is meaningless if the music is crap.
Promote the music not the band and let all of that other stuff follow.

The music is amazing. The guy at the helm is a great friend and a genius songwriter and producer. The music is selling itself, now we just need to find ways to increase their exposure.
Thanks for the ideas, D. Hadn't though of some of those.

Establish street teams in every city they´re playing! Send out posters, flyers etc and give free merch to the kids in your street team. This is very effective, but demands a lot of time.
And yeah, make a lot of different merch. Run contests on your facebook page where contestants are inviting all their friends.
If the music is selling itself it should be easy recruiting new fans! Sounds too good to be true! :)

^ Good call. Street Team might be a tad off our radar right now, in terms of current exposure, but a good thought to add to the list as their fan base grows.
What are some other Last.fm, Bandcamp, iTunes, CD Baby kinds of sites out there that they could get involved with? Anyone? Surprised there aren't more responses here.

none of those sites really matter unless the band are playing live like crazy.
basic first rule, get a local following from playing live everywhere and giving your music out for free...then move on to surrounding areas and so on.... get yourself onto spotify too. oh and local radio, university playlists and stuff too.- Yes, this is the line of thinking I was looking for. Universities, local radio, small radio, etc. Thnx!********

1) Hire a bunch of kids to graffiti their name all over town.
2) Have the singer start dating Lindsay Lohan.
3) Have the band get arrested for pissing on the local library.
4) Make sure every performance must be stopped due to fan violence.
5) Hire a beautiful model to sit naked on a fur rug onstage at each performance. Have band pretend to ignore her.
