I posted a thread last week about vacation ideas, but maybe this will get some specific responses. I trust most of you and you're discerning tastes 100x over some random tripadvisor review.
Anyhow, we're looking to go to an all inclusive in Mexico during the second week of July for a much needed long weekend getaway.
Anyone been to resorts in Mexico that you would go to again or really loved? Food reviews seems to be the biggest turnoff in some of the reviews we read. I just want decent food, unlimited beer and/or liquor mixed drinks, a nice room, and good beach/nice pools. Playa del Carmen, Cozymel or anywhere but Cancun (been there a few times).

I would say NOT anywhere in mexico.
- well, anywhere meaning most places on the Caribbean coastmg33

Well you need to tell us where in Mexico I have some really places and hotels you might want to visit specially in Playa del Carmen and Puerto Vallarta

guess i already posted this in the other thread, but i'll go into more detail:
http://www.thereefplayacar.com/n…i was there in 2006, so the beach wasn't as built up then as it is now (they extended the hell out of it after i went there). it was pretty cheap - $100/person/night for me, but you can get it way cheaper than that even. the rooms are roomy and airy, the food was GREAT (a lot better than the iberostar tucan, an all-inclusive down the road that was 3x the price), there were pools, the beachfront was awesome, service is really good.
PDC (at least in 2006) was clearly segregated into a tourist zone, and a resident's zone. The resident's zone was poorhouse mexico - a lot of cinderblock construction, dilapidation, kids playing in the street, unmarked restaurants - but it was interesting enough that I spent more time there than in the tourist zone (a huge-ass strip of stores that sell souvenirs/tequila/jewelry/etc).
It's really close to a lot of cool mayan ruins - you can grab a minibus ride to tulum (or rent a car or get on a coach), and see perfectly-manicured lawns and huge lizards among spectacular cliffside ruins, or you can get off the beaten path and go to coba, which are a much bigger ruin complex farther inland, which is much less crowded and does not get visited by the tour buses laden with octogenarians - i rented a bike and rode around there and climbed ruins all day and it was great.
you can also drive farther south to the sian kaan biosphere reserve - you can kayak the lagoon and look for crocodiles, or you can stop at any random point along the road and find yourself alone on a perfect white beach, coconuts underfoot, a palm tree above, maybe a sand crab or two, nothing but the sound of surf. i loved the area and would definitely go again.
yeah anyway. reef playacar.
- CROCODILES!!??!!??
http://images.cheezb…mg33 - Agreed. I was there a couple months ago. Coba was fun, and so was ripping around on bikes.beav
- Also, we booked some activities: cave swim / zip line / repelling / kayaking etc... mad fun.beav

i'd say fly to Ecuador. go to Quito, the capital. it'll cost about the same (usd) and you wont have the american hating that mexico has currently. The food is freak'en amazing, the culture is likewise. your dollar and visit is welcomed and you can splurge on a nicer room. its a young city with lots of offer. amazon basin, san andres glaciers, equator action ..

- and by "you talked me into it" you mean "you talked yourself into it," yes?bigtrickagain
- you are beginning to talk me into it too -- hmm i'm getting $773/person for a roundtrip ticket though...bigtrickagain
- yea, i'm looking into it as well.. this last min traveling will kill the rates tho.plash

We're pretty much just looking for a beach place to never leave while we're there. We're usually pretty on the go on vacations, but I told my fiance I'm literally only interested in a beach, a swimming pool, drinking, and maybe reading a book. I am viewing this as the ultimate lazy unstressed vacation I could make for myself. Lots of good looking places in Playa del Carman or Cozymel, it's just that the reviews are so mixed, and she's really big about reading reviews. One "the food options were total ass" is enough for her to scratch that option from the list.

I'll add that this place (while not an all inclusive) looked awesome:

i stayed here here when it was brand new: www.barcelomayabeach.com
pretty nice and family oriented as far as big pools and endless decent food.
- Thanks. that's on my list and looks pretty nice.mg33
- i stayed on cozumel for week first then ferried across to playa del carmen to stay there for a week.prophet
- cozumel ruled btw. stayed at a smaller all-inclusive which was great. moped'd around the island.prophet
- and almost hit a traffic cop with my moped but that's another story...prophet
- what smaller all inclusive? we're looking for somewhat quiet, tranquil, not many crowds.mg33

@mg33: i had to call my wife lol. but it's all coming back to me now. the smaller, friendlier place we stayed at on Cozumel is called the Allegro.

it wasn't as nice as the barcelo maya - smaller, older - but the service was great and you end up talking to staff. it had a cozier vibe i guess.
it's also calmer water so you just through on a snorkel and head out. every day i'd go out about 100ft and about 15 ft deep and there was a barracuda was always hovering above a rock, staring, waiting...
also if you go to cozumel, they have a great snorkel tours. our particluar tour took us to like five spots, before each dive they'd play 'tequila' by the champs and force everyone to take a shot. by the last spot we were all drunk and it was a deep, far from shore spot where the current move you out to sea and the sea floor just dropped into a black abyss - i thought for sure i was gonna get eaten by a great white. it was awesome.
- *ignore crap grammar.prophet
- i just reread this, holy shit you'd think i typed this drunk or something, lol.prophet
- last part of last paragraph sounds real fucked up.mg33
- yeah, we almost couldn't swim back to the boat at that point. there were other tours there so...prophet
- imagine 40ft of clear water below, drunk, barracudas, etc, then you realize your drifting over blackness...prophet
- safety is not a big thing there i guess... lol.prophet

All inclusive are usually BARF with the food.

i hope you realize that it's rainy season in the yucatan in july. i wouldn't go there and go to san jose del cabo instead, it never rains there.
- MarleyMarl0
Enjoy the rain.
- mg330
Well where the hell can I go that's cheap and quiet?

RE: Mexico all inclusives. I highly recommend Excellence Riviera Cancun. ( it is not in cancun. It's south in the riviera Maya region). I have been there twice. Got married there last summer. Love it.
