guess i already posted this in the other thread, but i'll go into more detail:
http://www.thereefplayacar.com/n…i was there in 2006, so the beach wasn't as built up then as it is now (they extended the hell out of it after i went there). it was pretty cheap - $100/person/night for me, but you can get it way cheaper than that even. the rooms are roomy and airy, the food was GREAT (a lot better than the iberostar tucan, an all-inclusive down the road that was 3x the price), there were pools, the beachfront was awesome, service is really good.
PDC (at least in 2006) was clearly segregated into a tourist zone, and a resident's zone. The resident's zone was poorhouse mexico - a lot of cinderblock construction, dilapidation, kids playing in the street, unmarked restaurants - but it was interesting enough that I spent more time there than in the tourist zone (a huge-ass strip of stores that sell souvenirs/tequila/jewelry/etc).
It's really close to a lot of cool mayan ruins - you can grab a minibus ride to tulum (or rent a car or get on a coach), and see perfectly-manicured lawns and huge lizards among spectacular cliffside ruins, or you can get off the beaten path and go to coba, which are a much bigger ruin complex farther inland, which is much less crowded and does not get visited by the tour buses laden with octogenarians - i rented a bike and rode around there and climbed ruins all day and it was great.
you can also drive farther south to the sian kaan biosphere reserve - you can kayak the lagoon and look for crocodiles, or you can stop at any random point along the road and find yourself alone on a perfect white beach, coconuts underfoot, a palm tree above, maybe a sand crab or two, nothing but the sound of surf. i loved the area and would definitely go again.
yeah anyway. reef playacar.
