I've known folks who shoveled shit for a living and were more than happy to do it...
... so if you find yourself 'complaining in your head' that you hate your job where you get to be creative etc... ... remember that there are happy shit shovelers out there...
... then get over yourself.

It's funny isn't...To most my mates they think that i'm the luckiest sod on the planet but when i try to explain that a job is just a job and that i too have bull shit days, they call me a cunt and reckon i'm just whinging for the sake of it.
- +1 I often say to them "You see a light on at 3am... it's me" Still... I love it.ItTango

If I dropped the big lottery win or something I wouldn't work. But I'd still do things creatively. All those projects I've scribbled about in my note books over the years that I've never had the time to really get my teeth into them.
Maybe I'd study a particular thing for a while and attempt to become world champion in that event/thing - a video game or a bar game. Something like that.

i do this because:
• i enjoy solving problems with many factors
• i enjoy the psychology of advertising
• sitting back and looking at something beautiful i've made is one of the greatest pleasures in life
• i'd be a painter but there's no money in it; in design i can support myself and enable a lifestyle other than "starving artist"
• the IQs of the people i work with in this industry are typically far above the norm
• i like making bulleted lists

- • I agree with all these points.
• Including the bullet list thing.mikotondria3 - this is a good bulleted listacrossthesea

maybe it's time for a change.
i left the design world years ago, mostly because i sucked, but i also realized my heart wasn't in it. love what i do now, but somedays i wonder if swinging a hammer and building things that were real would be a nice change.

I'm concerned that I rarely see designers over 45
- that's because by then they can play the political game and become Directorsflashbender
- I hear you on that one...necromation

When you think about all the things you could be doing for work, we have chosen to be designers (and such like) but are you really happy? if you didn't have to work... Would you, or is you love for design in it's many facets enough to keep you working? Where does it end for you or has it already but you just go through the motions.
I'm sure many of of us have found ourselves saying "fuck this" but continue... I remember reading somewhere that average person changes there career at least 3 times in there lifetime... i'm think i'm ready for porn now.
I'm pissed sitting at my desk wanting to go home...
