Im sort of new-ish to photography and trying to decide on what lens to get - either a 20mm f/2.8D or a 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6
Im going on a trip to HK, Japan and Philippines next month and want to pick up a second lens. Currently I have the 50mm 1.8 and shooting with a d90
Would you go zoom or wide first?
Cheers!

why not go with a superzoom? they are cheap enough to rent/buy - and for travel, there's really nothing better than a single lens that you never have to fumble to switch out when going for a shot.
Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S VR II:

http://www.lensrentals.com/rent/…there are many others... but you might as well start looking at those three.
- < This. 18-200 is a really really really useful lens. All I take on holiday is that and a 50mm 1.8flashbender

get a decent all round lens 25mm - 90mm. like those ^ need not be expensive

what eieio said.
you're on a crop sensor - so 25mm-90mm zoom will give you a nice normal/wide + zoom in for portrait.personally though, I think it's far more satisfying and consistent if you learn/shoot on primes. sell your 50 and get the 20mm and maybe an 85mm.
- er, why should he sell his 50? it's a great lens and has a super big aperture.bigtrickagain
- ? 2.8 aint big, if not pretty crap for a 50mm.inteliboy
- ah shit right - its 1.8. read post like moran. don't mind me.inteliboy
- :Dbigtrickagain
- and that 50 is <$100 new. A steal for a 1.8, and it's a decent lens. Resell would be worthless.DoTheMacarena

KEEP the 50.....
depends on you, not on the gear.....
Do you like to walk and previsualize? do you like to stand in one place and tweek...
Do you design stuff in your head, then hit the computer briefly, or do you sketch and tweek and redesign over and over at the computer?
If you answered the first, get a wide prime, if you answered the second, consider a zoom...

The IQ of those cheap zooms won't compare to that of the 20mm. What you gain in usefulness you lose in color/contrast/sharpness.
- um... no. those zooms are $600 zooms - the nikon 18-200 is a kit lens for the d300. good quality.bigtrickagain
- The image quality of the 18-200 is crap compared to any prime.nb
- Bigtrick, what are you talking about? the 18-200 is pretty shit w/ regards to IQ.Chief

F/2.8 through the entire range:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/pr…- there's also a non VC version if you don't need it. Saves you $100 I think.moniker
- saves you $165

get something like 24mm-70mm, f/2.8 all the way through. Versatile enough to do most things. That's for convenience.
At some point, though, you'll be happy with a wide prime (around 24mm), a normal prime (your 50) and a longer prime (135mm?). You can do just about anything with those and the quality will be tits.
