scarabin, you have taken the reins of this runaway freight train thread and steered incisively into a deep and cutting insight into life. in the end, seeing the posts of others in this thread tells us more about ourselves.

To Scarabin:
By definition Swiss originated design was intentionally clean, readable and objective. This means (like you mentioned) that it was free of "unnecessary clutter" that might steer the piece into something artistic. I'm not sure this means safe, because you still need to focus on symetry, grid and typography to name a few, so you have less elements to work on the piece.
What you call safe, I call faster to absorb and functional, while it definitely nice to see great technique like many of the the overly imitated contemporary designers out there, there is a place for every style and technique.
Just like you wouldn't play grindcore music over the phone when putting customers on hold at the bank, or have Fausto Papetti opening for Lady Gaga.
Imagine if urban signaletics were over artistic and took time to understand due to heavy graphic elements on the composition?
We would have a harder time understanding maps, finding a cross street or figuring out where the fire exit is at the hotel.

- dude are you fucking serious? i already addressed all that shitscarabin
- woah, and I thought you wanted to engage on a serious design conversation..Miguex
- and all I get is a "are you fucking serious note"....

scara- minimalism isn't visually pleasing to you? the decluttering and stripping down of mindless excess? personally, i like it. Brockmann's posters are like a nice piece of clean, modern architecture. it's about self-control, class, grid, & structure. it's needed as a refresh and refuge from all the overly-designed crap out there. it stays.
- just my opinion. but i can see how you wouldn't be into it - being into the goth aesthetic & all.iCanHasQBN
- i'm not into the goth aesthetic.scarabin
- whatever you wanna call it... i dont care.iCanHasQBN
- "it stays" LOL!!!!!whereRI

comic sans has more personality than helvetica. much more.
- but that personality is of a twat. Say something worth saying in Helvetica.mikotondria3
- i dunno... Europeans like it?iCanHasQBN
- but really, the appeal of Helvetica is that it is structured and default-looking, making it a decent candidate foriCanHasQBN
- projects with a modernist, minimalist style.iCanHasQBN
- people have animosity toward it mainly for the fact that it's been used so much. but that shouldn't discount it's quality.iCanHasQBN

This coming from a guy that works in an industry where 90% of movie posters are set in Trajan. Talk about boring shit.
- i wouldn't exactly assume designing movie posters is boring. sounds fun, even if you do have to use trajan.iCanHasQBN
- i haven't used trajan in a poster in yearsscarabin
- but yeah, i'm opposed to lazy, boring design in general, not just this stuffscarabin
- yes.. but you have to fit soooo much type in such a small area at the bottom, lots of fun..vaxorcist

scarabin, if you were paying attention, you might realize this thread isn't about swiss design at all...
