anybody have any experience doing this? i wanted to prototype some figures i'm working on in wood, and was thinking balsa might be the easiest way to go. any thoughts, is there something better?
once constructed, i'd probably just paint in acrylic.

from experience making load-bearing structures in 4th and 5th grade (odyssey of the mind - anyone remember that business?), balsa is super-easy to cut, even at precise angles, using nothing more than an xacto knife and grid paper.
that's all i got.
- hahahaha yeah dude...had to do the little skit and roll the pool balls at itTheMagicSheep

"prototype some figures"
can you elaborate on this? what are 'figures'

have you tried a 3D printer? it can print directly in ABS plastic.

Modelling clay on a wire armature seems to be the technique of choice anytime I've seen it. I think some can be baked to set.

i'd love to do 3D printing, it's just too expensive for me though. I chose wood cos the shapes are fairly simple, and it would be cheap to produce.

in reference to what monNom said- clay on wire armature can be a good route for modelling but i wouldn't have it fired in a kiln properly, because most wires will lead to air holes in your clay which is likely to cause it to explode in the kiln!
a lot of natural clays with also just crumble if left to dry, so keep them moist.

balsa = sheet? If so - laser cut dat shit.
If not sheet - why balsa?
