    hey guys,
I have a question and could use some advice.

heres my setup as far as external drives,
Mac Pro using external 4port USB2 hub
    • 2-1TB external drives
    • 1-1.5TB external Raid drive with a power switch
    • 2-250GB external drive with power switches
(the extra drive is obviously not plugged into the 4 port hub)
I use these drives for storing, music, old work, apps, fonts, crap like that, i don't work off of them, for that I use another external drive 2TB via Firewire 800.

here's my question or situation: on my external USB2 drives, the ones without power switches (2-1TB drives), they connect automatically when I boot up my system, I don't like this, so I just keep their power unplugged until i need them, but where I have them (out of the way) its kind of a pain in the rear to have to plug them in and out when I need them or not, and ide like to keep them physically out of the way if you know what I mean.
any one here deal with multiple external drives and have a more efficient way to dealing with them. I shopped around for a USB2.0 HUB with individual power or connection switch to each, but haven't found anything like this. is there a software solution? this is no big deal really, the amount of times I really need to access some of these externals is minimal, and its really not that hard to just plug/unplug something when I need it, but I was just wondering if there was a more efficient way. some kind of USB2 external drive management system or something.

    thanks guys.

wow. why not just use the internal drive bays?

    • plenty of room there. (you could put 2tb or more in each bay if you want!)mrghost
    • faster this way toomrghost
    • Thanks Mrg, I think from now on ill buy internal drives, I have these externals all over the damn place.moldero

Maybe get a powered 5 port USB hub and then use a "manual" or "share" USB switch to control which HD gets the hubs USB power, if that makes any sense. (I would only do this if you only plan on using one drive, not all of them a lot).

I just use a powered USB hub and connect my HD's (I have 4 external HDs) to the hub. They all get powered through the wall outlet though. I don't trust running that much power through a USB hub. They are out of the way though and I don't have to plug/unplug the drives.
