Maybe get a powered 5 port USB hub and then use a "manual" or "share" USB switch to control which HD gets the hubs USB power, if that makes any sense. (I would only do this if you only plan on using one drive, not all of them a lot).
I just use a powered USB hub and connect my HD's (I have 4 external HDs) to the hub. They all get powered through the wall outlet though. I don't trust running that much power through a USB hub. They are out of the way though and I don't have to plug/unplug the drives.
