Have any recommendations for a nice all around lens for a 7D? Along with photo, I'll be shooting video (mostly interviews).
Anyone use this lens?

too slow. go for a 50 or 85mm prime 1.4 to 1.8
lensrentals.com
never spend your money when you can rent for 10% of purchase price.- lensrentals.com is a good site - rented many times from thembigtrickagain

get the 1.8 50mm. it's only $120 dollars and is a fantastic lens.
p.s. renting is a waste of cash unless you only plan on shooting once.
- that lens is plastic shit.********
- very bad for videoephix
- takes good pictures though. dude its 100 bucks, toss it if you dont end up liking it lolsofakingbanned
- $100 which can go towards the much better 1.4 which is only a few hundred more.ephix

Thats a good choice.
When you aren't sure what lens you want to spend your money while still getting your kit together, renting is a great way to compare glass.
I have the 1.4 50mm a EF 24-105mm f4L IS and an EF 70 mm - 200 mm F/2.8 IS
I rent anything else I need.

all around lens for Canon DSLR video.
- i would not consider a telephoto lense 'all around'eieio
- 1200mm wow, it shoots through schoolstedvandell
- I would not consider the suggestion of a $120K 1200mm lens to not be a joke...DoTheMacarena

stop thinking about $$$ gear and go shoot! a 50mm F1.8 and a kit 18-55 isn't too bad believe it or not.... Lens sharpness for video is FAR less important than for stills. Also not that you want to minimize lens "breathing" where when you do a focus pull, your lens's optics cause the focal length to change a bit, hence an unintentional "zoom"
a bunch of adapters and old manual focus Nikon primes can do nicely if you're the kind who wants to shoot carefully and with smoother aperture tweeking while shooting by hand...

- 18-55 is pure shit that shows lens curvasture********
- 18-55 lens curvature? do you mean barrel distortion or soft corners?vaxorcist
- yes barrel distortion********

i have an canon EF 35mm 1.4 L fixed that is super sharp, which is really like a 56mm with the crop but its a good all around fixed distance. I think a non L would be just as effective tho

the 50/1.4 is like $300 and as close to L-series quality you're going to get for that price. it's a great lens, 100x better than the 50/1.8 and totally worth it.
also because the 7D has the 1.6x crop factor the 50mm acts like an 80mm, a perfect portraiture focal length.- for manual focus stuff on 5D mark II, I LOOOOVE old Nikon AI primes with an adapter, smoooth focus..vaxorcist

If you have to ask then in all seriousness you don't even know what makes a good lens so any suggestions are kinda pointless just get anything and as someone mentioned above go and shoot!
- ouchbigtrickagain
- NOOOOO, i meant: shoots lots of stuff, find your shooting style and where your crappy lens falls short so you can make more conscious decision.pr2
- more conscious decision.pr2
- the idea of asking here first is so you dont have to buy the crappy lens in the first place.ephix
- none of the answers here make any sense though. people just post links to lenses not knowing how it will be used.pr2

Has anyone else tried the 50mm F1.4 USM on a video shoot? I tested one and found the manual focus ring strange, where it seems to be electronic "fly by wire", you pull the focus ring and it then turns a motor, so there's a slight, but detectible and odd delay... so it's strange for follow focus..... I'll probably use Nikon AI primes on my next shoot, but on this one I used an old 50mm F1.8 mark I, the old one with a metal mount and a wider focus ring...
- sigma 50mm 1.4, not much more and much nicer than the canon 1.4slappy
