you don't need iTunes to sync email. IMAP syncs with whatever email service you are using such as gmail.

To be honest, Mail sucks a big one. I've come from PC to Mac. The one good piece of software from Microsoft was Microsoft Office. It had your contact manager, email, and calendar all in one app, one window. Email signatures were easy to create. Email formatting was 100x easier. You could create mail folders easier. Getting POP and IMAP accounts was far easier. Going from an email to looking up a contact was a cinch. I hate how Mac Mail, iCal, and Address Book are all separate apps, with windows taking up my desktop. iCal also sucks in comparison, the interface just fails when you compare the two. It's the one thing I miss from the PC world.

I really hate Entourage. It's not *horrible* for a quasi-Mac app and I really don't see why having a 'proper' Outlook is more enticing. I don't really use calendars so that doesn't really enter into it. :/
Anyway, why not use Gmail with Mail? You can use the web interface, you can use the desktop app, you can use both. Just don't use POP.
