Saving up for a camera to replace/step up from my old D40.
If you were me, would you buy a D300S or a 7D?
Or should I keep saving money and go full frame later?
I don't have any lenses I'm attached to, BTW.
Thanks for the advice.

"I don't have any lenses I'm attached to, BTW."
I'd invest in lens first. They'll make a bigger difference in your work than a full frame body.
P.S.
What are you shooting? Are you a pro? Why would you need a full frame body?

I've purchased new bodies every 12 months for the past several years. Mostly for tax purposes but also for quality. This last time I went from 50d to 5d MK2 and doubt I'll need another camera for at least a few years.

D300s if you want fast AF, low-light AF and like Nikon user interface, also D300s has video, but not as nice as Canon...
7D if you want to switch to Canon and get 1080P video
5D mark II if you want full-frame + low-light low-noise + 1080p videoMy recent experience is the 300S is very, very nice for grab shots, things moving around, unpredictable light,etc.... 5D is great for predictable shoots, where you can control lighting, movement... I have not used 7D....

"Not a pro. Just a hobbyist with bigger inspirations.
I'd recommend not spending money on a new body but instead look at getting some nice glass. Lenses hold their value a lot longer than bodies....

MKII - hopefully the last camera I buy - prime glass is next

Thanks for the tips so far. Much appreciated. I have a fast prime lens already that takes some crisp shots. Mainly I'd like lower noise in higher ISO. Not sure how much of a jump it would be from D40 to D300 in that regard, as the D40 has much fewer MP for the same sensor size. Anyone know?

i don't think it really matters which camera you buy. they are all fine cameras.

what's your budget? how bad do you want video? low light? both? how about autofocus speed/accuracy? lenses? cuz these are great bodies and you need to have nice glass on these to really notice the difference; except the full frames with low light.

I have a Nikon D80 and have been rottenly jealous since my friend sold his same camera plus some VR lenses and bought a 5D mkII. The pictures it takes are absolutely insane, but ironically I'd almost buy it solely based on the 1080p video. He bought a Rode hot shoe boom for it and bam, there you go... excellent, excellent filming capabilities in an SLR. I remember when I got my Sony VX2000... maybe I'll film myself taking a poop on a pile of money in glorious 720x480.

I have a 1DsMkIII, and a 5DMkII... I am about to buy a 7D... you can actually shoot 720P at 60 FPS... It a REALLY great camera for an APS-C sized DSLR... well worth the money - extremely fast focusing and great low light levels.. plus it has a magnesium body, so it'll take a few knocks. In some ways better than the 5D... just not full frame..

D900, hopefully it'll be out sometime soon!

not gonna name drop - but - i work for a big post house and we have a big name director shooting 35mm motion picture film this weekend - but he still wants a 5dmkii on set making sure we have it all covered - just in case we need to rebuild plates - thats why 5d's rock. If you dont need to do this then get a 7d - but as everyone says above - its all about the glass anyway....

5dkmk2 here also...as well as a 7D, selling the 7D because i am now broke, to me full-frame is worth the investment. i don't film much video buts nice to have it there.
and true it is about the glass, now im saving for a 16-35L and 100 macro.

I love the 7D. For what I do, it's more than enough camera. There are times that I wish I had waited a little longer and gone with the 5DMkII, but I don't know that I'd want to give up some of the 7D's plusses. They're all great, just buy one and start adding lenses.

i have yet to meet a 5d mkii owner that wished they bought a 7d. however, i do know people who wish they would have saved more for the 7d. i also know those that love their 7d though, but either way... full frame or gtfo

Buy the best that you can afford. I got a great deal on a 7D a few months ago and I love it. I would have bought a 5DMII but couldn't stretch the budget.
If you don't start worrying afterwards that you've made the wrong decision, surely you'll be happy with any of these.

7D.. and some nice glass.
not to pimp it too much, but i just finished this clip, shot entirely on a 7D and canon 100mm macro..
but yep, full frame is good, but 50fps at 720 is nice also..

Anyone who has used both a 7D and a 5D mark II, can you indicate if the 7D's AF is much better? I just shot a job with a 5D mark I and find myself fighting the AF too much for my taste.... had to shoot kids moving around ALOT
