It's not like the first Macs were that well received. They have been the underdogs for decades, and the center of ridicule from "users" on the PC side for just as long. So, after reading that article and how the iPad is just another Apple product in line with Job's long-held vision, I only have one thing to say/ask:
So what?

Good article, thank you.
I also completely agree with the last sentence:
"Yet somewhere, deep inside, Wozniak must realize what the release of the iPad signifies: The company he once built now, officially, no longer exists."
As a kid I had an Apple IIc and a couple of other machines (my dad was big time into computing), and watched the variety of components compatible with Apple devices shrink and shrink and shrink, until the modern day, when devices only approved and fitting into Apple's financial ecosystem were permitted. Sad, but understandable by virtue of the almighty dollar.

"The Macintosh uses an experimental pointing device called a ‘mouse’. There is no evidence that people want to use these things."

what? really he had to order them? not even free
"Steve Wozniak has said that he pre-ordered three iPads, two for himself and one for a friend. This is a testament to his incredible good nature and his loyalty both to the firm that marginalized him in the 1980s and to a friend, Jobs, who refused to write a foreword for his memoirs. Yet somewhere, deep inside, Wozniak must realize what the release of the iPad signifies: The company he once built now, officially, no longer exists."- i know, that totally sucks doesn't it?BuddhaHat
- Why? Wozniak hasn't been involved with Apple for 30 years.monospaced
- I mean, 25.monospaced
- why? it's not like it's a million-dollar device. He's still an Apple-related face, I figured they would've dished him out 20 to give to his influential friends...BuddhaHat

- He's not really Apple related and hasn't been for 25 years.monospaced

he was seen with a 3G iPad the day it started selling outside an Apple Store, so I guess he still has privileges (the 3G iPhone isn't sold yet)

Now in 2010, the iPad takes the same ideas to their logical extreme. It is a beautiful and nearly perfect machine.

It explains to me, at last, how apple after all this time seems to be two things...a company supportive (in theory at least) of open source ideals while at the same time being completely controlling of every single thing to do with their products.
