I've found a few resources on the subject, but I'd like to know how many of you feel about this.
Besides not having to upload files to a server every time one makes a change, what advantages does developing a website on the WordPress platform offer?

it's easy to code, tons of resources in the codex and its free

its getting hack-attacked a lot lately which is rather worrying. Expression Engine has better security I am told.

What do you want to use WP for?

I'm building a small product site with ecommerce. A buddy of mine suggested I use wp. Is it true that google will rank a wp page higher? I'm not much of a coder myself. So far I have not found any sort of wp visual editor either.
- WP visual editor?
I'd pay someone dude******** - +1 for paying someone********
- it's called dreamweaver?kingsteven
- no, it isn't.********
- no it isn't - its hand-coding and knowing a bit of PHP - shit man - good luck but I don't envy your task. Sorry********

I'm not a huge fan of WordPress, but you'll probably be fine.

"not having to upload files to a server every time one makes a change"
This is true of any CMS or for that matter data-driven site in general, not Wordpress in particular.

Basically Wordpress is the easiest to setup and use, but also the least powerful/ flexible. Given your lack of experience coding experience, that might be a good thing though. It might be a good place to start learning a little bit of HTML and CSS.

I'm capable of accomplishing what I need with Dreamweaver and Flash.
Does a WP designed site have any advantages over a site designed with Dreamweaver? If this is the case what are these advantages?I'm totally down with putting the time to learn it, but I want to know what makes it a more desirable platform over the Adobe solutions.
- will you design your layout using tables?********
- You do NOT design a site with Dreamweaver, it only provides crappy code to you.
Also, I heard using Dreamweaver causes cancer.Reaact

Using Dreamweaver is beside the point. These Adobe products are just editing tools. You can use DW and Flash to create and edit Wordpress content.
Do you understand the difference between a static site and a database-driven one? Normally to build an e-commerce type site, you'd want to use a database to store details such as product info and so on. So you'd setup a database on your server and then create some PHP (or Ruby, or Python) based pages that both output your HTML and also query the database to dynamically display that data within it. Wordpress and other CMSes simplify that process for you so that you don't have to worry about the database querying part, and can just enter your dynamic content in an admin UI.

Wordpress ... it's a standard.
- ukit0
There's plenty of good alternatives to Wordpress. I wouldn't build a serious site using it. But it's not a bad place to start.

Thanks for schooling me gents. You have just confirmed what little understanding I have about what WP is. Back to the drawing board on this one.
:)

I don't think you need to head back to the drawing board. You can do a decent little ecommerce site in WordPress with plugins and the admin is pretty friendly so your PHP skillz would likely be minimal, but you might want to recruit a developer to help you theme it. If your dev skills are limited to design view in Dreamweaver you'll get stuck pretty quickly.

I like the wordpress ecosystem, all the stuff already invented....
BUT the recent mass infection of WP sites gives me pause.....- http://blog.sucuri.n…********
- I had to fix a site that got hacked w/ this one yesterday. Not fun, but was fixed easily.NoFavorite

If you start comparing Dreamweaver to Wordpress it might be a great idea to start looking for a new job.
