I'm being asked to break up the word "economics" into "eco–nomics" in a logo I'm working on, and it looks a bit retarded. The client wants to emphasize the "eco" part as it is an environmental brand, which I'm doing through the use of two colour tones instead.
To me it feels like such a bad move to break up a word as it makes it less legible and also looks naff from the negative space it creates.. what are you're guys thoughts on the use of these?

i agree with you, colour would be the way to go to break them up. you could also do different weights as an option depending on the typeface used.

unfortunately breaking up words in any way always looks retarded, mainly because it was done by everyfuckingone in the 90-ies.
hyphen/dash/middle dot/slash/colon – retarded
light/black – retarded and forced
serif/sans – retarded and mostly gay
italic/straight – retarded and ugly
different colors – retarded AND lamesorry dude

personally, I don't think it's really going to effect legibility... as a reader, if you can't put the two fragments together, you might want to consider that you may have some issues... but on the other hand, it's not really long enough to break up... you could also underline eco, probably nicer than alternating weights...

*your guys'
Oh wait, you're talking about hyphenation, not apostrophes. Don't use - – — to break up the word. Looks "naff?"

what about a subtle gradient light across eco or outlined

I got it.
Wrap the 'ECO' part in a leaf, surrounded by a halo that is emitting a starburst. The starbust itself could have funky gradients, swirls and color as to really give the ECO part a VISUAL EDGE and to make it POP.
The NOMICS part can just be set in Helvetica Neue Bold/Heavy, tightly tracked.

Adding extra characters is bad economics.

The ink used on the unnecessary hyphen is bad for the environment.

might find some good techniques here....
