try this....
play audio.
use speakers in the back audio port
plug headphones into front audio port
open sound settings
toggle through choices in dialog and see what happens

It's a long shot, but my Macbook Pro had a similar issue. Had to do with the optical audio port simply not recognizing that headphones were plugged in. The fix involved inserting and removing the headphone jack numerous times and some other shit. Look into it.

have you pushed the plug in far enough? I have a pair that you'd think were pushed into the jack, but no dice. push a little harder and 'click' works fine.

probably already done this -
but select the "line out" option, not digital out.
and plug it into the back.though really, it should work automatically. does for me.
