Reselling hosting

I am very selective about which clients I host. Only longer term ones where I know they or the project won't give me those Sunday evening emergency calls.
Otherwise, I agree that there is no money to be made and just find a good host with a referral program and get your money there.

Just be like any other host and take 3 days to respond.

Don't sell the hosting - sell a retainer / maintenance / support contract.
You look after everything. The client doesn't have access to anything technical.
You get paid - they get reassurance that everything is being looked after.

Thanks for all of the advice people.
I think I'll just skip hosting it myself and just "manage" their hosting for them.

I resell some hosting and have had the emergency my website is down call which nearly gave me a heart attack as I was in the middle of my own emergency and it was for a big client.
The email tends to be the killer - first they need support for setting it up and then they lose email and it's your fault or the person they are emailing doesn't get their mail cause it went into the spam box . . . you know the rest.
That said, I make a bit of money from the less painful sites with low expectations. Probably pays for my hosting outright. So don't dismiss too quickly. I've started to increase the prices to reflect the pain it causes me which will either mean clients find something cheaper or I make more money for the pain.
Seriously though, email is the killer. I have a dedicated server with less than twenty clients on it so I figure that's not a significant load.
It is a way of regular annual cash.
