pretty good mini-series so far.
- Episode 3 was a smidge on the boring side, but I guess they're being historically accurate.Andrew_D
- So were episodes 1/2. Series sucks ass next to band of brothers.CygnusZero4
- Yep kind of the "Helmet for My Pillow" / Robert Leckie episode.Mimio

^^ However even with Band of Brothers and many other war movies and shows ... there are so many characters and names to remember that sometimes its hard to follow.
The Pacific is mainly told through the eyes of 3 of the main characters. I don't see a problem with Tom Hanks doing a few seconds of intro per episode.

that fight in ep.II was craaaaaaazy.

with regards to the build up of BoB, which i agree was more compelling - wasnt that indicative of how the US entered the European theatre and in the Pacific they were more "thrown into it" ?

I'm really looking forward to seeing it when it comes to Australia!
My grandfather was a tank driver for the Australian Army and helped defend against the Japanese when they got to Papua New Guinea. My mother told me when she was a child that her parents made a point of not eating asian food or buying japanese products even 30 years after the war had ended.
My parents set up a boarding house for international students and as a child I grew up surrounded by a lot of asian people. My grandparents always were very sour for that and I don't think they ever forgave my mother. I've travelled around asia and been to japan 5 times and lived there for almost a year, I also have a long term Japanese girlfriend who I live with. She doesn't know anything about the war, they don't teach that part of their (and the rest of the worlds) history in Japan as it is still a very sensitive issue. We were watching band of brothers and she didn't know anything about the war in Europe. She was shocked to then find out when I explained to her what Japan did during those years.
Amazing how the world changes and our perceptions of it...

Finally caught the first episode last night. I liked that they threw themselves in the shit right away. Band of Brothers was kinda boring in the beginning. Not sure if BOB was filmed in HD(it was great, don't get me wrong), but the quality of the Pacific is much better. That firefight night scene across the channel was epic.
Looking forward to episode 2.

^^ the acting is terrible ... are you kidding me?
there are 10 episodes .. you cant have shooting and blowing shit up in every episode .. that would get boring quick.and as far as all the comparison to Band of Brothers .. I think it very much compliments that Series .. IMHO
top production values .. great battle scenes and good ensemble cast

Sorry, that just wasn't as good as this:
When they tear up that camp at the top of the hill, etc.

japan was the reason we even entered the war, otherwise the attitude was; "you Europeans want to go and kill each other again, go ahead."
- I bet that was what they were thinking... hmmmJazX

@mg33 "My grandfather earned a Purple Heart in the 3rd Marine Division at Iwo Jima..."
Wow. My uncle was in the same division at Iwo Jima...weird.
- Interesting. Was he also at Bouganville and Guam? My grandfather's name was William Ezra Gallegly.mg33

My grandfather was on the USS Tennessee as a Turret Capt. when it was hit in Pearl harbor. He's 94 and still alive, living by himself in California.
Last year my sisters interviewed him on camera about all his war stories and edited it with some news footage from back then and gave everyone in our family a DVD copy of it.
He doesn't really like talking about it but we convinced him to do it.He's a pretty modest man and hates the fact that the few survivors get together each year. "Why the hell would I want to remember that day, fact is most these men where hiding and crying somewhere while others laid dying" he says.
