My old laptop finally gave up the ghost last night.
I'm not too precious about the data and don't have anything really important but I would like to dispose of it in an ecologically friendly way and keep my data secure. What is the best way to dispose of it and still make sure the HD 'doesnt fall into enemy hands'?
I don't want to have to open it up and remove the hard drive if i don't have to, but if it comes to it.... open it up rip it out and landfill it....

all electronics manufacturers and retailers in europe have to take back electronic goods for recyling. Normally it is when you buy something they take the old product off your hands
but I know that some places (currys etc) just take the product and don't ask for the receipt - this is probably because they all have recycling targets to meet
now there are massive problems with the recycling infrastructure with our e waste being dumped in africa and china and it isn't all going that way and lots is being treated properly
I find it interesting that when you have any electronic device in use it's just a product but as soon as you want to get rid of it it is classified as hazardous waste...
- Do you have any idea how much money these companys can make from recycling tech, a shit load, that why they take the products of your hand?********
- how much do they make, have you got a link? I know that industry has to finance the recycling infrastructure.lowimpakt

according to the United Nations Environment Programme we (the world) are dumping 40 million tonnes of electronic waste each year.

What is the model? what happened to it? If it's a 2007 MBP, and the problem is the graphic card, apple will repair it for free, even with the warranty expired.
- i had a 2006 even and they sent me a brand new one.johndiggity
- he mentioned bad design, so I doubt it's an applemonospaced

go to youtube
type in the model of your laptop plus the phrase "hard drive removal"
see if somebody has posted a video on how to remove the hard drive...then you can get a usb case for the hard drive and use it as a portable drive... and recycle the laptop at a store...

Best is to physically remove the drive and destroy it. Drilling holes in the drive with an electric drill (wear goggles) is near certain to render it unusable, smashing it with a lump hammer is the next best thing.
If it works with display and keyboard in it then reformat it or delete as much data as you can.
