Someone told me that blogger sucks, but didn't quite specify why. What are some of the fundamental differences between these two?

one is like a car you own, the other is like a bus you ride sometimes.

wordpress you can completely customise it and use as a CMS - not just as a blog.
blogger seems to just be that, a blogging service, though I could be wrong as never used it.

depends what you're wanting to do. if you simply want to create a blog on either services server then they're very much the same. you can do a lot more visual editing to wordpress but blogger has pretty simple css so it's not too hard to make it more your own.
if you want to do anything beyond the very basics of blogging or create a personalised design then wordpress is the way to go. host it on your own server in under 10 minutes and away you go.
blogger just cut some ftp services which makes me wonder what direction it's going to go but if you do choose blogger you can easily download the database and add it to a wordpress install at a later time.

wordpress.COM is pretty useless, the only thing good about it is that you can export all your posts into a file where as with blogger and tumblr you're pretty much stuck on the site. I think tumblr is better than blogger but its no where near as good as setting it up on your own server with the real wordpress.org platform
- btw there's a dif between .org and .com most people don't realizeeieio

My choice will go for wordpress if you're hosting it,
I tried tumbler but waster hours trying to understand how to change a background color once I chose a theme.
blogger is nice but like MonNom says you're riding in the bus, can't steer it.
so go for wordpress its the easiest to custom and I know some hosting now install it for you if you buy a MySql database.
